First grade students in Ms. Plume’s, Ms. San Paulo’s, Ms. Caraccia’s and Ms. Katakofsky’s classes at Academy Street Elementary celebrated the culmination of their nonfiction research unit with a festive Black and White Day.
As part of the unit, students studied penguins, exploring their life cycles, habitats and the similarities and differences among various species. To mark the end of their learning, students dressed in black and white to mirror penguins and welcomed special guests into the classroom.
Students shared their penguin research folders with their guests, highlighting the information they gathered throughout the unit. The celebration also featured performances, with students singing several songs, including “I’m a Little Penguin” and “Antarctica,” along with creative activities such as making penguin masks. Families enjoyed a special black and white themed snack as students proudly showcased their work.
