First graders at Academy Street Elementary have cracked the case on tricky words and officially earned their badges as “word detectives.” To celebrate their sleuthing skills, each student received a certificate marking the successful completion of their word detective unit.
Principal Lorie Beard surprised students by dressing as a detective and presenting the certificates, adding to the excitement of the celebration. Throughout the unit, students took part in engaging “missions” that helped them learn strategies for decoding challenging words, including tapping out sounds, stretching words, re-reading and using the “stop and solve” technique. After receiving their certificates, students partnered up in the library to practice the skills they’d been learning. Not only did the program reinforce important reading skills, but it also made learning fun!
