Sylvan students jump into the world of non-fiction

Third graders in Mrs. Varghese’s class at Sylvan Avenue recently began a new unit focused on nonfiction reading.

Students spent time examining a variety of nonfiction books, learning to identify the elements that distinguish them from fiction. As they moved through the texts, they became familiar with features such as captions, diagrams, headers, tables of contents, insets, sidebars and others, as well as how each one helps readers make sense of the information.

To build on this knowledge, students took part in a matching activity using vocabulary cards and photos. Their task was to pair each text feature description with its corresponding image, reinforcing what they had discovered during their reading.
