Sylvan Avenue third graders explore electromagnetism

On October 28, Mr. Mitchko’s third grade class at Sylvan Avenue Elementary conducted a hands-on lab to explore the science of electromagnetism. Students learned how an electromagnet works by wrapping a wire around a nail and connecting each end of the wire to a battery case. When powered, their manmade electromagnets became strong enough to pick up paperclips!

Through this experiment, students discovered that the nail becomes magnetized when electric current flows through the wire. They then tested their electromagnets by moving paperclips into a cup and counting how many they could collect. It was an exciting way to see science in action!
