Suffolk County Farm brings the barnyard to Sylvan Avenue

The Suffolk County Farm and Education Center visited kindergarteners at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School with some special animal guests in tow for an educational presentation on wildlife.

The students learned about winter wildlife and different animal behaviors, including adaptation, migration, hibernation and dormancy. Students then played interactive games, working through a series of animal flashcards to match each animal with their correct trait.  They then had the opportunity to meet some of the farm’s inhabitants, including two rabbits and an eastern box turtle. Educator Ashley Farra brought each animal around the circle of students, allowing them to carefully pet the animals and ask questions.

The presentation culminated in a fun craft as students made bird feeders out of Cheerios and pipe cleaners to hang in trees at home.
