Students holding baked goods

James Wilson Young Middle School’s Cooking Club got off to a sweet start at its first meeting of the school year, as sixth graders worked together to make mini s’more cups. Students combined graham crackers, brown sugar, butter, marshmallows and chocolate to create the bite-sized treats while practicing their skills in the kitchen.

The club meets once a month, giving students the opportunity to explore new recipes and learn essential cooking skills, including measuring ingredients, chopping and following directions. Recipes often reflect the season or upcoming holidays, with possible future dishes including holiday cookies and hot cocoa in December and tacos for Cinco de Mayo.

Each meeting introduces a new recipe, giving students the chance to build on their cooking skills, try different ingredients and discover what they can create in the kitchen.
