The Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Oct. 13 Board of Education meeting brought a full slate of recognitions, from sincere student “thank-yous” to impressive academic achievements.

The evening began with a special tribute to the district’s Board of Education in honor of Board of Education Recognition Week. Students from Academy Street, Blue Point and Sylvan Avenue elementary schools arrived with oversized cards signed by their classmates, but they didn’t stop there. Students lined up at the microphone to personally thank board members, sharing their own reasons for appreciating all they do for Bayport-Blue Point.

James Wilson Young Middle School Principal Ms. Westerlund and Bayport-Blue Point High School Principal Mr. Walcott also joined in the recognition, presenting board members with small tokens of appreciation on behalf of their respective student bodies. Adding to the evening, the Bayport-Blue Point High School choir and band delivered impressive performances for a packed auditorium.

The focus then shifted to students making a difference beyond the classroom. Matthew B., Ethan B., Thomas B., Aila C., Kaitlyn C., Cameron C., Bailey G. and Ethan L. were honored for completing 40 or more hours of community service during the 2025-26 school year. Whether cleaning up local parks, tutoring younger children or organizing food drives, each found a way to give their time and talents to others.

An impressively large group of Bayport-Blue Point High School students filled the stage next as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Meredith Kelly and Principal Walcott presented certificates recognizing their academic accomplishments. Students earned distinctions through the College Board’s Advanced Placement program, including AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Capstone Diploma and AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Additionally, students were celebrated as Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude honorees.

The evening concluded with two of the Class of 2027’s biggest academic honors: the announcement of Bayport-Blue Point High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian. Valedictorian Adil S. leads the class with a weighted average of 103.37. An AP Scholar with Distinction, Adil is also a member of the tennis team, chamber orchestra and Science Olympiad. Salutatorian Ian R. earned a weighted GPA of 101.97. He is a member of the National Honor Society and orchestra and is also an AP Scholar with Distinction.
