Sylvan Avenue fourth graders spent time learning about the Native American tribes that once called Long Island home during an interactive program on Oct. 9. They explored a “museum” of artifacts that offered a closer look at Native American life and culture before heading outdoors to try several traditional games.

Their studies then carried into art class with Mrs. Gayer, where they learned about Native American symbolism and the meanings different symbols can hold. They put that knowledge to work by choosing symbols that held personal significance and sketching them, along with other designs and patterns, into original jewelry designs.

Students etched their designs into aluminum tooling before adding beads and finishing touches to create their own necklaces, tying together what they had learned with their own creativity and personal expression.
