The start of a new school year means new classrooms, new routines and for some students, a brand new school. To help make that transition a little easier, the Bayport-Blue Point School District welcomed incoming middle and high school students for orientation events on Aug. 26 and 27.
At James Wilson Young Middle School, incoming sixth graders got a first look at their new school during Locker Day on Aug. 26. Later in the day, seventh and eighth graders had an opportunity to find their new lockers as well.
Principal Patricia Westerlund welcomed students and gave them an introduction to what life in middle school will look like. Students then explored the building, found their classrooms and took on one of the most important first day tasks: figuring out their lockers. Upper-grade student mentors were also there to lend a hand, answer questions and share some helpful advice about making the most of middle school.
The Class of 2030 got a head start on their high school experience on Aug. 27 during Bayport-Blue Point High School’s annual freshman orientation. Principal Jamal Walcott welcomed the incoming ninth graders and introduced them to some of the academic and extracurricular opportunities awaiting them at the high school.
The day also featured a keynote presentation from motivational speaker and wrestler Rohan Murphy. Murphy shared his personal story of overcoming physical challenges and pursuing his goals, encouraging students to approach challenges with perseverance and determination.
After the presentation, freshmen teamed up with upperclassman BBP Connect peer mentors and headed out for guided tours of the high school. They visited classrooms, got a feel for the building and had the chance to ask questions about what to expect as they begin the year.
With their lockers opened, classrooms located and questions answered, Bayport-Blue Point’s newest middle and high school students are ready to take on the year ahead!
