Gifted & Talented Program

This morning, the 5th grade Gifted & Talented class had an exciting in-class presentation from the Suffolk County Forensic Science Laboratory. During this visit, students learned how forensic scientists gather and analyze physical and trace evidence to help solve crimes. They discovered how these scientists work closely with detectives, medical examiners, and law enforcement to uncover important clues.

Students became investigators themselves by participating in a simulated crime scenario. Through hands-on activities, they explored real forensic techniques, including taking a footwear impression using an electrostatic lift, lifting fingerprints with magnetic powder to locate touch DNA, carefully packaging hair and wood chip evidence into specialized containers, and analyzing handwriting samples while learning how DNA can be collected using a swab box.

This engaging experience gave students a deeper understanding of forensic science while building important skills such as critical thinking, attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving. I was a great day of learning to extend our classroom unit of study on Forensics.Gifted & TalentedGifted & TalentedGifted & TalentedGifted & TalentedGifted & TalentedGifted & Talented
