In honor of Flag Day, students at Academy Street Elementary held a special ceremony on June 13 to celebrate the American flag and its meaning.
The event opened with a traditional folding of the American flag in which students learned the significance and meaning behind each fold.
Several fifth graders then took center stage with original poems they created and performed before the class delivered renditions of patriotic favorites, including “God Bless America”, “Americana” performed with violins and “America the Beautiful” performed by the orchestra.
The celebration continued with a musical performance from the fourth and fifth grade choruses, singing “Fifty Nifty United States,” while the third grade chorus delighted the audience with “All-American Me and You.”
Before the ceremony, each class designed its own flag to represent their classroom community. This creative activity encouraged students to reflect on what makes their class special and how unity can be expressed through symbolism.
