Students at Academy Street Elementary spent the week of May 19-23 spreading positivity and kindness during the school’s Nice Matters Week.
The week kicked off with Nice Matters Day on Monday, where students rotated through various sessions, including an improv activity, a talk with alumni athletes and playing conflict resolution games. First, former Academy Street students turned collegiate athletes shared their personal stories and the role kindness played in their academic and athletic success. Fourth and fifth graders then facilitated thoughtful conversations using conflict resolution cards, helping their fellow students explore ways to solve problems with empathy. Lastly, high school students collaborated with their elementary peers in performing team building improv scenarios.
Tuesday was Give a Compliment Day and students received and shared personalized compliment cards, brightening each other’s days with kind words.
Midweek, classes took turns participating in Plant a Seed for Kindness, an activity where students planted seeds in the school’s courtyard.
The week concluded with the Carly Fun Run, an annual event held in memory of former student Carly LeStrange, celebrating her legacy and message of, “kindness matters”.
