AP Government students gain firsthand insight into local government at Suffolk County Court

As part of the Alumni Connections program, students from Mrs. Francese’s AP U.S. Government and Politics classes visited Bayport-Blue Point alumnus Christopher Clayton, Suffolk County Attorney, at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Joining Mr. Clayton was Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. Together, they shared insights from their educational journeys and discussed the career paths that led them to their current roles in local government.

The presentation was both engaging and interactive, with students given the opportunity to ask questions about local government, landmark Suffolk County court cases and the criminal justice system.

The highlight of the day came when Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine addressed the students. Mr. Romaine spoke about his extensive career in public service, which began as a high school teacher and led to his election as Suffolk County Executive. He also reflected on his early childhood living in Bayport and his brief experiences attending elementary school within our school district. During his presentation, Mr. Romaine previewed topics he would cover in his ‘State of the County’ address later that day and answered students' questions.
