To mark Fire Prevention Month, kindergartners from Academy Street Elementary School took a field trip to the Bayport Fire Department to learn all about fire safety and prevention.
Inside the firehouse, firefighter Ray Cooney spoke to the students about important safety tips, including when to call 911, why it’s important to know your home address, what to do if a room fills with smoke and the importance of having a family escape plan and smoke detectors. The students also practiced the “stop, drop and roll” technique.
The kindergarteners were excited to see a firefighter suited up in full gear and learned how each part of the uniform helps keep them safe. They checked out the tools firefighters use every day and then headed outside for a closer look at the firetrucks. Each student even got the chance to spray a real fire hose and climb inside the trucks to see the equipment firsthand.
