In March, Ranger Eric Powers from the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery visited fourth grade students at Academy Street to lead an educational workshop on the Bobwhite Quail and its important role in Long Island’s ecosystem.
Building on this experience, the students had the unique opportunity in May to incubate Bobwhite Quail eggs right in their classrooms. Over a 23 day period, students carefully monitored the temperature and humidity of the incubators and eagerly awaited the hatching of the eggs at the end of the month.
Following the hatchlings’ arrival, students will continue to care for the young quails for approximately 10 days before the birds are moved to an outdoor brooding cage at Caleb Smith Park. A releasing ceremony is planned for July, where the students will celebrate the successful conservation project.
