James Wilson Young Middle School students demonstrated that soap has a use beyond washing hands. The art students in Samantha Burns class have been using soap as a medium to carve various designs and shapes.

The students first studied the 1950s wood carvings of Barbara Hepworth. They also talked about subtractive art, a process that requires the artist to subtract from the medium. The students transferred a design from trace paper and, using carving tools, slowly but surely carved away at the soap bars until a design was formed on the top of the bar or until the soap became an object. Some of the designs included a butterfly, baseball jersey, ice cream cone and a fish.
