Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Bob Venero Fitness Center was thrumming with music and the synchronized pedaling of 19 spin bikes as physical education students participated in the school’s Spin Fusion class. Run by Physical Education Chairperson Tricia Livingston, the full-year course for students in grades 10-12 is based on a strong foundation of cardio.

“My goal is for every student to take the class once and leave with confidence in attending a group class,” Ms. Livingston said. “It’s also a great workout.”

Students enrolled in the class also have the opportunity to lead the lesson and bring in a playlist that all of their peers would like to exercise to for the 30-35 minutes of biking. They are evaluated on their preparation, routine, communication and other indicators. Student leader Ali V. described the class as a “real workout and better than any gym class in the school.” Angleina Z. disclosed that this is her second year taking the class. She wants to take the class again next year because Spin Fusion is such a positive environment.

Ms. Livingston explained that the students started off slowly by learning how to use the spin bike components. Starting spinning to two songs and then three songs, the students eventually worked up to a 30-minute routine. The class will now infuse dumbbells, TRX trainers, resistance bands, kettle bells and medicine balls for a total body workout.
