Academy Street Elementary School students, faculty and parents have embarked on a reading adventure in which the entire school reads the same book. During an assembly on March 3, Principal Kerry Vann revealed the book choice, Katherine Applegate’s “The One and Only Ivan,” a Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller.

“Being in a community of readers, at school and at home, while sharing the same book generates excitement, joy and engagement,” Ms. Vann said.

A book was handed out to students from each of the school’s families to start reading and was provided by the Academy Street PTA. There will be activities associated with the book throughout the rest of the school year and a celebration of the book on May 24 at the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library.
