The Bayport-Blue Point High School Science Olympiad Team Does it Again!!
The Bayport-Blue Point High School Science Olympiad Team once again participated in the Regional Competition that was held on February 7, 2009, at Half-Hollow Hills High School East. With great effort on the part of the entire team, Bayport-Blue Point ‘s Team of 15 students came in 4th place out of the 43 teams that participated in this year’s competition. This qualifies the team to continue on to the state level competition to be held at West Point on March 20th, 21st. Over the past 9 years, we have qualified for this prestigious
state level competition 5 times, including last year. Bayport-Blue Point is the only High School that, while sending a single team to the competition, still manages to stay in the top ten teams every year. This is a remarkable accomplishment.
Of the 18 regional events, Bayport’s Team placed within the top ten scores of 13 of those events. This year’s team racked up an amazing 15 medals that included: 5th place to Rich Swanson and newcomer Vanessa Sanchez in Fossils, 4th place to Co-Captain Steve Chant and Nick Iannucci for Electric Vehicle, 3rd place Bronze Medal to Geena Waddle and Brendan Lenz for Herpetology, 2nd place Silver Medal to Co-Captain Nikita Shah and Brendan Lenz for Cell Biology, 2nd Place Silver Medal to Jen Mercouris and Declan Diemer for Solar Power, 2nd Place Silver Medal to Brendan Lenz, Alex Fraczak and Rich Swanson for Picture This, and Steve Chant and Dan Degayev took home the Gold for the Bottle Rocket- Egg-O-Naut event. Other team members include Nischay Shah, and team newcomers Adam Jansan, Dylan Kann, and Brandon O’Brien- all working hard to add to their team’s victory.
Mrs. Edgar- the Science Olympiad Team Coach, and the entire team would like to thank Dr. Hearney for coming to the Regional Competition to cheer on the Team and the science department for their support-especially Mr.Ungaro.
Congratulations Science Olympiad Team you make us proud!!. Now it’s back to work for the West Point Competition –it has 25 events….
