Eagle Scout/Gold Award Students - updated |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Eagle Scout/Gold Award Students (UPDATED) Most of the students started in scouting in kindergarten at the Cub Scout and Daisy level. Scouting teaches young people to try many different activities such as computers, health, exercise, improving the environment, and citizenship. They earn merit badges for their efforts. There are also opportunities to get involved in community service. Every time they advance a level, the challenges increase, but in the case of this group, the camaraderie that ensued was another benefit of the scouting experience. The requirements for Eagle Scout and Gold Awards are rigorous and require planning, fund raising, and completing a final project. Some of the projects the Eagle Scouts completed include constructing a new foundation, patio and steps at the Bayport United Methodist Church (Joe G.), renovating the Chamber of Commerce Park at the foot of Nicolls Road (Vin), correcting an eroded service road at Cathedral Ponds Park by installing railroad ties and other reinforcements (Joe V.), and improving Bayport Beach by installing benches, power washing, staining, painting and planting (George). The Gold Award students worked with residents at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, providing companionship, delivering meals, and taking residents on day trips (Kristen and Gina), and set up an exercise program with children in a homeless shelter, sharing knowledge of sports and putting a field day together for the neediest of children (Jennifer). Any community in America would be proud to have one or two students with this level of dedication to the community in which they live. In Bayport-Blue Point we have seven to honor and celebrate here. None of the students achieved what they did in isolation. They were inspired and guided by parents and other family members, scout leaders, friends, and fellow scouts. Some were inspired by previous Eagle Scouts such as Neil Armstrong and Steven Spielberg. Teamwork is an important part of scouting and many of these students helped each other throughout the course of their projects. Every one knows how to work collaboratively as well as how to demonstrate leadership. Doors can open for you when you are an Eagle Scout or have a Gold Award. Some of our students have been offered substantial scholarships for college because of this accomplishment. It is an eye-opening and impressive addition to any resume. In fact, by reaching this goal, these students will reap benefits from the experience all through their lives. Remember, they are not yet high school graduates. Boy Scout Troops 329 and 130 and Girl Scout Troop 243 should be very proud of these young men and women. Joe G., Vincent, Joe V., George, Kristen, Ginamarie, and Jennifer should be very proud of themselves. Bayport-Blue Point High School demonstrates our pride by showcasing their outstanding success here. Click to view the slideshow. Penn Relays 4/10 FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR HAITI RELIEF Students from the National Honor Society have initiated fundraising events for Haiti relief. After the earthquake, members of the NHS looked for ways they could help, and the idea of selling t-shirts during lunch hours was born. Georgia Bates designed the shirt, and students from the NHS volunteer to man the table during their lunch periods.
