Fifth graders at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently participated in the school’s annual spelling bee. Each fifth grade class first held its own internal competition and then its top three spellers were entered into the next round to compete against each of the top spellers from the other classes. This gradewide round was livestreamed from Sylvan’s cafeteria into all of the fifth grade classes, as well as to the school’s fourth graders, who participated in their own in-class spelling bees in preparation for next year.

Bayport-Blue Point School District congratulates Eric Swinkin and Antonia Day, who were named the winner and runner-up of this year’s Sylvan spelling bee, respectively. On Tuesday, March 16, Swinkin will participate in the 2021 NYC Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place in the form of an online test this year. The winner of that will go on to represent the NYC Spelling Bee program in the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer.
