After receiving a visit by author Heather Worthington and learning about the interesting travels the dog in her story “Miles of Smiles” took, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students decided to coordinate a supply drive for some of the most helpless victims of Hurricane Sandy – the pets.

During the “Paws for a Cause” drive, students donated a wide variety of supplies, including dog and cat food, cat litter, bones, treats, towels and blankets. The items collected were given to the nonprofit animal rescue organization Guardians of Rescue, a group that has been actively involved in providing shelter, supplies and veterinary care for the furry victims of the hurricane.
