Howdy from the Fifth Grade

As part of their social studies lessons on the Wild West and the Westward Expansion, the fifth-grade students at Blue Point Elementary School had the chance to learn firsthand what it means to be a cowboy as they celebrated “Cowboy Day.”

Dressed as cowboys or cowgirls, the students learned the significance of each piece of clothing these individuals wear – from wide-brimmed hats to boots with spurs – as well as the long cattle drives they embarked on in the mid to late 1800s. The Wild West Cowboy Day began with a showing of the movie “Home on the Range” and followed through with a multistation workshop that called for the students to write cowboy poetry and read cowboy stories. As a conclusion to the memorable lesson, the students had the chance to visit a photo booth to have their picture taken after their successful “cattle drive” and visit the chuck wagon for some “sinkers with Texas butter” snacks.

Middle School Student Wins BNL Science Fair

For her project focused on students’ success on exams based on how they are administered, James Wilson Young Middle School sixth-grader Emily Phua captured a first-place win for her grade level at this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair.

“I was very surprised when my name was announced,” said Emily. “It felt really good that all of my hard work paid off.”

Employing the skills she had acquired in her school’s science research class, Emily completed the project over a six-week period, during which time she created two math exams and administered them to 17 volunteers. Introducing variables into the experiment, Emily worked to determine if a person’s score improved or declined based on how they take the exam; that is, whether they complete it from start to finish in one sitting or whether they take short breaks. After graphing her results, Emily noted a 32 percent decline in her subjects’ scores when breaks were taken.

Speaking to the benefits associated with students completing research projects, teacher Kathy Brand explained, “Science research, and in fact science in general, teaches students how to reason. With the skills they acquire during this class, they begin to look at world problems with an eye toward the scientific process and always ask questions about why things occur.”

This is the third time a Bayport-Blue Point student has won the BNL Science Fair in the past five years, which is how long the science research program has run at the middle school.

Scientific Study on Swimmers and Crawlers

As a complement to their classroom science lessons, Blue Point Elementary School kindergarten students had the chance to get an up-close look at the animals and insects they were studying when local professionals visited their classrooms. As part of their “swimmers and crawlers” unit of study, the students learned about different aquatic animals and commonly found insects, including their body parts, life cycles and habitats.

With help from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, the kindergartners were shown how to set up an aquarium and filled their classroom units with guppies, catfish, shrimp and snails. After creating a terrarium filled with beetles and pill bugs, they were educated on the different components of insects, various stingers, and types of antennae and eyes when a representative from the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences came to the school. During a “build-a-bug” workshop, the students helped to create a classroom bug. Using pipe cleaners and egg cartons, they also fashioned individual keepsake bugs.

Two for Tea

In celebration of Mother’s Day, third-grade students in Nicole Greco’s class at Academy Street Elementary School paid tribute to their mothers with a literacy celebration. The students created personalized poems and fun quizzes about their moms and a special coupon book for them to use at a later date. After carefully revising and editing their descriptive poems, the third-graders proudly shared them aloud during a class Mother’s Day Tea celebration just before this year’s holiday. Each student’s mother sat proudly in the classroom to listen to the creative writing pieces before enjoying tea and a snack together.

Pledges for a Greener Future

In recognition of Earth Day, this April James Wilson Young Middle School’s Ecology Club coordinated a schoolwide initiative focused on creating a greener tomorrow. The club members distributed paper leaves to their peers and asked that they inscribe them with pledges on what they could do to “go green” – in other words, help conserve resources or help the environment. The completed pledges were compiled and put on display in the shape of a tree in the main lobby, which served as a visual reminder of the students’ commitments.

Titanic Disaster Discoveries

The maiden voyage of the unsinkable ship that was ultimately wrecked by an iceberg was the focal point for a recent project involving the fifth-grade students in Jennifer Kleiber and Lori Mandell’s class at Blue Point Elementary in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. During a nonfiction unit of study, the students read countless texts on the Titanic disaster to learn more about this literary genre before writing individual feature articles on the subject. For their penned pieces, each student chose a topic related to the Titanic, such as Captain Smith, iceberg warnings, lessons learned after the sinking and the different boarding class levels on the ship, and researched that area using various sources of information. Taking notes on the facts discovered, the students created articles detailing their chosen area of study.

Throughout the unit, the fifth-graders learned proper note-taking techniques and how to organize their notes, as well as different journalistic components, including the importance of a catchy lead sentence and strong supportive paragraphs. The finalized projects were bound into a class book on the Titanic, which was sent home every night with a different student in the class.

While the entire class enjoyed learning about this historic event, one student was able to make a special and memorable connection with the famous ship. After speaking about his genuine interest in the subject, fifth-grader Patrick Druckenmiller was encouraged by Mrs. Kleiber and Mrs. Mandell to write a letter to Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic wreckage in 1985, expressing his curiosity in the boat. To the class’ surprise, Patrick’s correspondence to Dr. Ballard was reciprocated with a personalized letter and autographed picture from the famous oceanographer. As a special thank-you, the class sent Dr. Ballard a copy of their class book on the Titanic.

LEAP Classes Spearhead a Unique Project

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the LEAP classes at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, along with their book buddies, peers and mentors, painted recycled puzzle pieces to create one-of–a-kind necklaces and key chains. The completed designs were sold during the school’s lunch periods to raise funds for Land and Sea, a local sports and recreation program. This Westhampton Beach company organizes activities ranging from basketball to surfing, and services not only children with autism, but also all children who have unique needs and abilities.

Working with fellow Academy Street students, the LEAP classes worked to sell their creative products and practiced several of the classroom skills they were learning, including reciprocal conversation, social skills and handling money. As a result of the school’s fundraiser, more than $400 was raised for the worthy cause.

Musical High Notes

The talent of Bayport-Blue Point School District’s student-musicians is evident during events throughout the schools and community. From annual concerts, performances as part of school musicals and during special events in the community the dedication and effort of these students shines through.

This year, more than 40 students from across the district were selected to participate in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association band, chorus and/or orchestra ensembles. Invitation into this coveted group is based on a student’s NYSSMA score from the prior year’s solo festival as well as letters of recommendation from their teachers.

In addition to this countywide recognition, two high school music groups recently received recognition on the national stage. The Bayport-Blue Point High School chorus and orchestra participated in the "Festivals of Music" Competition in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area during the weekend of April 12. During which, the high school string orchestra, concert orchestra, and chorus all received ratings of "Excellent." The high school string orchestra received an award of first place, the chorus received an award of second place, and the concert orchestra received a third place award in the groups' three respective divisions. The groups were comprised of nearly 220 students.

Elementary Lego Robotics Team Heads to National Tournament

Currently in their inaugural year, the FIRST Lego League Robotics team from Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District has made a national name for themselves. Having received two championship awards during the regional competition at Longwood High School earlier this year, the Academy Street Lion Bots have earned a bid to compete at the North American Championship Tournament in California this May. Out of the thousands of teams in North America, only 72 teams were chosen for this honor.

To prepare for this year’s contests, the students spent months applying real-world math and science concepts as they worked to design, build, test and program robots using integrated technology. During their preparation, the students were challenged to complete research similar to that facing today’s scientists and learn the critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills needed to succeed in the tournament settings.

Volunteers Cara and Jonathan Spier and Bob Kaler coach the team. The group, comprised of students in grades 3-5, has been meeting as part of the school’s PTA enrichment program. The district extends its congratulations to team members Sean Davis, Miles Fallon, Riley Kaler, Aiden Kleeman, Pierce McGuinness, Nicholas Mignano, Cole Spier, Matthew Stawicki and Tyler Teufel and wishes them well at the national competition this May.

Inquiring Minds Research Current Science Issues

James Wilson Young Middle School’s sixth-graders embarked on a guided, inquiry-based environmental discovery project in their classrooms and the school library to answer questions related to pollution, global warming, endangered species and more. Inquiry learning is at the core of 21st-century research processes and asks students to lead their own learning while the teachers provide foundation and guidance. This process defines five main pathways for learning: defining a problem, connecting to a topic, determining quality sources and producing new knowledge to present to others (only four pathways listed here). Furthermore, it challenges students to use higher-level research and critical-thinking skills that reflect qualities sought after in the career world.

Spanning the areas of English, science and technology, the project began with the sixth-graders gaining background knowledge in their science classes to spark questions, leading to answers that help explain an environmental issue or dilemma. In their English classes, the students worked extensively to create writing pieces, while their use of Lexile and Common Core-related informational texts via the library’s online databases led them further along their paths of discovery. The sixth-graders also learned formatting skills in Microsoft Office Publisher to create colorful flyers that marketed the need for change in the environment and society. The students on Rochelle Petre’s and Jennifer Pedersen’s team then presented their findings to their peers, implementing the last stage of the inquiry process. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and comment on others’ projects.

The Interdisciplinary Environmental Issues Project was developed by Mrs. Petre and Mrs. Pedersen in collaboration with library media specialist Kelly Noeldechen and was integrated into lessons with the sixth-grade English and science departments.

Information regarding opt out of state assessments

Recent media reports have sparked conversations regarding a parent’s ability to have their child “opt out” of the upcoming state assessments. Please be advised that, as per current state law and the regulations of the New York State Education Commissioner, this is not a viable or legal choice. As stated in a memo from the State Education Department’s Director of the Office of State Assessment, “There is no provision in statute or regulation allowing parents to opt their children out of state tests.” The statement went on to explain that these exams are required of all New York public school systems and children are therefore mandated to sit for their administration.

Contrary to some of the information being shared, there are several potential consequences for districts that fail to participate in state testing, including, but not limited to, the loss of Title 1 funding and a negative impact on a district’s accountability status.

While some parents are questioning the importance of these mandated exams and their frequency, the district reminds the community of the benefits that they provide. The data obtained from these tests is one of the measures the district uses to determine the appropriate educational services a child requires, and it provides valuable input when making decisions regarding student placement and program adjustments.

Based on the information above, the district encourages universal participation in these exams and feels that failure to take or sit for the assessments would not be a prudent educational decision for any child. Should you have any questions about this matter, you are encouraged to contact your child’s building principal.

Winning Experiments

With projects aimed at uncovering facts about products, from ones used every day to those of a more globally significant nature, more than 100 Blue Point Elementary School students showcased their clear understanding of the scientific method when they entered this year’s school science fair. Developing their ideas around a topic of their choice, the students worked for several weeks to prove or disprove their hypotheses and collect data to coincide with their findings. Once their results were finalized, they created colorful poster boards displaying their research for all science fair visitors to examine.

“The Science Fair Committee would like to congratulate all of the participants in our 2013 Science Fair,” stated Caitlin Cregan, a speech therapist at Blue Point and chairperson of the Science Fair Committee. “It was obvious that each of the students put a great deal of effort into their project, and the results were outstanding.”

A panel of judges reviewed each of the projects submitted and selected the following to represent Blue Point at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Science Fair on May 4.

Brendan Matimore (Kindergarten) – “Bubble Bubble”
Quinn Carroll (First grade) – “How Greasy Is Your Favorite Chip?”
Julia Powers (Second grade) – “Aging Apples”

School Collects Thousands for St. Baldrick’s

With the help and support of the surrounding community, the National Junior Honor Society at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District collected $6,840 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization set on finding cures for childhood cancer. Contributing to this year’s successful event were the 40 individuals who volunteered to shave their locks, and the countless others who selflessly gave to the cause both at the event and through the NJHS’s online donation drive. In addition to the willing head-shaven participants, six individuals volunteered to cut their hair (at least 8 inches) for Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that uses the hair to make wigs for women battling cancer.

Sylvan’s Peer Leaders Fundraise for Project HEAL

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s Peer Leaders, under the direction of student Ana Altman, collected $265 for the organization Project HEAL by selling originally fashioned buttons. After learning about a family friend who had lost her life to an eating disorder, Ana rallied her peers together to raise funds for this nonprofit for young people suffering with eating disorders.

Project HEAL was started four-and-a-half years ago and has raised over $250,000 to support patients in residential treatment, as insurance often does not cover the expense. They have opened more than 20 chapters across the U.S. and Canada.

From Writer to Reader

Famous children’s illustrated book author Brian Heinz visited Blue Point Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District to teach the students about the book writing and publishing process. With entertaining re-enactments of a variety of his real-life experiences, Mr. Heinz taught the students methods he uses when researching possible book topics. During the assembly, Mr. Heinz also walked the students through the book production process, from idea conception to final completed project.

“My hope is that someday I will take a book off the shelf and it won’t have my name on it – it will have one of yours,” stated Mr. Heinz.

Following the schoolwide assembly, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes met one-on-one with Mr. Heinz in writing workshops to learn specific techniques to improve their writing skills.

Hola! Bonjour!

As part of the district’s FLEX (Foreign Language Experience) program, Bayport-Blue Point elementary school students are given the unique opportunity to study another language at an early age. During the course of the 10-session program, third- through fifth-graders begin to learn common Spanish phrases and develop an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. Fifth-grade students using Rosetta Stone language immersion software also have the opportunity to learn some beginner’s French.

There are added benefits to the linguistic ones commonly associated with the study of a foreign language. As FLEX teacher Sally Miller explained, “For a condensed, introductory program such as the one we have in the district, studies show that early exposure to another language positively influences students’ perceptions of other cultures and their willingness to accept and learn about other places.” She further noted, “By the time the students enter middle school, they have a fair amount of experience with the basics of these languages, and it often helps them decide which program to continue in the secondary schools.”

In the early grades, the students learn basic communication phrases such as certain foods and how to say their name. These introductory lessons are in close connection with their social studies curriculum, which includes Mexico and various other cultural studies. Fourth-graders continue to build upon this foundation by learning how to describe themselves and their likes and dislikes, while fifth-graders conclude the program by writing a descriptive “Who am I?” essay that they share aloud with the class.

This March, as a conclusion to their study, the fourth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School created a puppet show for their classmates. Working in pairs, the students created a dialogue script that they acted out using colorful puppets. Each pair incorporated the various vocabulary words they had been studying, including numbers, sports and emotions. It was a perfect opportunity for them to practice their speaking and listening comprehension skills.

Young Authors Inspire Playwrights

Bayport-Blue Point elementary school students regularly demonstrate their creativity through school projects and writing assignments. Encouraging the district’s budding young authors to embrace their literary talents, students from each of the three elementary schools recently penned original stories that showcased the English language arts skills they have gained through classroom studies. These stories were submitted to Child’s Play, a touring theater company that visits schools throughout the United States to perform works written by students.

During their visit to each school, the talented professionals of Child’s Play chose three student-composed plays out of the many submissions to act out. The students were pleasantly surprised to have their pieces selected and enjoyed watching their stories come to life. In addition to the school winners, several students at each building were named honorable mentions in the call for playwrights.

Congratulations to the following winners:

Academy Street:

Third-graders Kevin Weiss, Thomas Prendergast and Aidan Crank – “The Silly and Smelly Skeleton”

District Appoints Permanent Assistant Superintendent

The Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Board of Education has appointed Dr. Timothy P. Hearney as its new assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. Dr. Hearney will officially assume this role within the district on July 1, 2013, taking over for Miriam Flynn, who has served as interim assistant superintendent for the past year.

Dr. Hearney is a familiar face within the Bayport-Blue Point community, having worked as the high school principal for the past five years. “We feel very fortunate to have found our new assistant superintendent within the current fabric of our administrative team,” stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “Dr. Hearney has been an integral part of the school district, and during his time here has clearly demonstrated that he possess a finely tuned skill set to assist in preparing our students for college and careers. His accomplished track record for raising the bar speaks highly and directly to his belief that all students be provided with opportunities and high expectations.”

During his tenure with the district, Dr. Hearney has not only been responsible for operational and curriculum development aspects at the high school, but also for raising the bar for student achievement. While principal, the high school’s Advanced Regents diploma rate has increased to over 70 percent, with continued growth projected in future years, and there have been notable successes within the school’s Advanced Placement program. In particular, the number of AP exams administered has increased from 167 to more than 360; the number of AP students has increased from 106 to 204; and the number of AP Scholars has increased from 39 to 64, with five students being named National AP Scholars earlier this year. Dr. Hearney has also been instrumental in increasing the rigor of the school’s instructional program, as more than 20 high-level courses spanning all curricular areas have been added to the high school program, a School to Business Partnership that enables students to gain real-world career experience has been implemented, and an increased percentage of students are electing to take a fourth year of science and math instruction. In acknowledgement of the school’s collective efforts, New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John B. King Jr. named Bayport-Blue Point High School a 2012 Reward School.

“I am very thankful to the Board of Education and Dr. Butera for the opportunity to work in this new capacity within the district,” stated Dr. Hearney. “I know firsthand the quality instructors we have within BBP – having worked alongside many of them at the high school for the past five years – and look forward to raising our already-high expectations in order to continue to move the district forward.”

Prior to joining the district in 2008, Dr. Hearney worked in the Islip Public School District for eight years, serving in a number of administrative positions. Additionally, he has worked as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University’s Oakdale Campus and in the area of special education at Western Suffolk BOCES. He is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the School Administrators Association of New York State, the Council for Exceptional Children and the Council of Administrators of Special Education.

Dr. Hearney holds a doctorate in educational leadership and accountability from St. John’s University, a professional diploma in educational leadership and administration and a Master of Science in education, special education from LIU Post, and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from SUNY Albany.

A Thank You from Overseas

Blue Point Elementary School students have been engaging in meaningful, character-building community service projects throughout the year, and since the late fall, three classes have been working to spread their generosity overseas to a local soldier serving in the Air Force. Book buddies from Mary Magee’s first-grade class and fourth-graders from Ashley Olmstead and Ashley Silvering’s class teamed up with second-graders in Linda Rubacka’s class to create care packages and write letters to Staff Sgt. Patrick Williamson during his five-month deployment in Afghanistan.

“Connecting with our English language arts curriculum, we spoke with the students about the letter-writing process,” stated Ms. Rubacka. “The project gave them a sense of purpose and was the perfect way for them to see a real-world application of the lessons they are learning in the classroom.”

Upon returning to the United States for leave, Mr. Williamson visited with the students to thank them for their kind efforts and let them know that the packages made him feel as though he had a part of home with him during his deployment. He also shared a bit about his work with the armed forces and how important it is to give thanks to service men and women

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the national literacy movement Read Across America Day, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-graders from Jaime Abran’s class and first-graders from Christina Law’s class shared a few familiar stories together as book buddies. Sporting oversized hats similar to that of Dr. Seuss’ famed Cat in the Hat, the students took turns reading aloud such favorites as “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Horton Hears a Who!” during the afternoon celebration. In addition to the colorful hats they had made, each first-grader received a handy bookmark fashioned by the fourth-graders at the end of the book buddies event. The partnering classes get together throughout the year to celebrate their commitment to becoming lifelong readers through a variety of literacy-based events.

Science-Inclined Students Compete Regionally

Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Science Olympiad team competed in the recent Long Island Eastern Regional Science Olympiad Competition this winter, where they captured an eighth-place ranking out of the 50 competing schools. By a mere point, the team fell just short of qualifying as the first alternate to the six teams traveling to the New York State Science Olympiad Competition.

During the regional contest, the 15 team members and two alternates worked to make their district proud as they demonstrated their scientific knowledge during a series of 18 events. In addition to the team’s overall ranking, members Laura Chant and Victoria Mercouris received an individual fifth-place medal for their gravity vehicle, and in total, the rest of the team scored in the top 10 in five of the 18 events. The contest’s written events included chemistry lab, forensics, disease detective, rocks and minerals, remote sensing, forestry, anatomy and physiology, designer genes, circuit lab, triple e, thermodynamics, dynamic planet and water quality, as well as building and construction events such as gravity vehicle, boomilever, magnetic levitron, glider plane and robot arm.

The students had been training for the contest with the help of their coach Donna Edgar and team captains Christine Bachek, Alex Gamcsik, Victoria Mercouris and Shane Trauthwein on a weekly basis since October, increasing their practice time to a daily schedule in February. Bayport-Blue Point students have been participating on the high school’s team for the past 19 years; in the past 10 years, the team has advanced to the state competition six times and has been selected as the first alternate three times.

Sparking Conversations

Filling the school cafeteria, Bayport-Blue Point High School students and several staff members engaged in a meaningful discussion of current politics as they took part in the third annual Issues Forum, titled “Election Reflection.” The event, which focuses on a different topic each year, centered on the recent presidential election – in particular, domestic and foreign policy as well as social issues surrounding the nation’s political parties.

“This event focuses on helping our students develop a deeper understanding of politics and enables them to gain a better appreciation for the importance of such historical events as the reelection of a president,” said John Limperatos, the school’s social studies department chair and program coordinator. “Through their independent research and the information shared during the Forum, we hope the event sparks a knowledgeable and civil dialogue about issues of current importance.”

On the panel were current seniors Bridget Foley, Alex Gamcsik, Nick Keenan and Sean Rall as well as high school teachers Anthony Curran, John Limperatos and Sean Meade and middle school teacher Stacie Sosinski. Fielding questions from moderator Matt McMullan, the school’s English chairperson, the panel shared their individual viewpoints on such topics as the Electoral College, the polarization of the Republican Party and what President Obama’s second term will look like. Audience members – including students, faculty, administrators and Board of Education members – had the chance to submit questions for the panelists to discuss.

The event not only served as a mechanism to inspire outside discussion of classroom history topics, but also as a fundraiser for a senior scholarship in honor of former teacher and New York State Assemblyman Paul E. Harenberg. Over the past three years the Issues Forum has raised hundreds of dollars for this cause.

Cultural Explorers Gain Educational Experiences

Classroom lessons on language and world culture came alive for eight James Wilson Young Middle School students this February when they visited the beautiful Central American country of Costa Rica.

During the seven-day school-sanctioned trip, the eighth-graders, all of whom are currently studying Spanish at the middle school, had the chance to experience what it is like to live and work in the foreign country. From daily interactions with their host families to visits to natural landmarks such as Mount Arenal, Costa Rica’s only remaining active volcano, and the Baldi Hot Springs, the students had the chance to soak in a bit of history. Putting their lessons to good use, they also had opportunities to perfect their Spanish when visiting local marketplaces and an orphanage in Alajuela, and while painting rooms in a clinic that services more than 5,000 people. Additionally, to better experience the rich culture of the country, the students participated in a cooking class and learned traditional dances.

“With today’s curriculum, we focus on students developing 21st century skills – skills that they will need to succeed in our ever-growing global society,” stated Spanish teacher and program coordinator Keith Scharfschwerdt, who explained that in the future students will need international skills in order to collaborate in business. “The most educationally beneficial aspect of the trip was perhaps the individual experiences that the students had when living with the host families. They were able to see how another culture works from the inside – something that they could not learn by just reading a textbook and something that many people never get to experience, or at least not until much later in life.”

Upon returning to school, the students, along with Mr. Scharfschwerdt and fellow Spanish teacher Vincent Rosa, who also chaperoned the trip with four parents, spoke with their classes about the trip. From the pictures they took, the students could see how beautiful the land is, and from their descriptions, they learned just how impactful the cultural experience was for the eighth-graders.

Using Math and Literacy to Mark 100th Day

Blue Point Elementary School kindergarten and first-grade students in the Bayport-Blue Point School District marked the 100th day of school by conducting a variety of hands-on mathematical exercises and literacy projects. The students and teachers had a full-day celebration, complete with arts and crafts projects, mathematical counting exercises and several tasks centered on the number 100.

Dressed to look like they were 100 years old, the school’s first-graders created necklaces out of 100 pieces of cereal, completed projects using 100 items in commendation of the day, counted to 100 using different multiples and, with the help of their teachers, wrote essays about what they thought they would be like at the age of 100. Donning creative hats and t-shirts displaying 100 items, the kindergartners also completed several 100-themed activities, including word games and creative counting projects.

Taking Care of Their Pearly Whites

In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Blue Point Elementary School kindergarten students learned about the importance of daily brushing when Stacey Varley, a local dental educator, visited the school.

Ms. Varley, who works with the South Shore Pediatric Dentistry group, encouraged the students to brush their teeth twice a day, floss regularly and schedule dental visits to ensure complete oral health. The students were able to view a model of teeth and learn about the different instruments that dentists use when examining and treating patients. The students also had the chance to identify foods that contribute to healthy mouths and were reminded to enjoy sugary treats sparingly.

As a complement to the in-class visit, the kindergartners created visual representations of healthy teeth when they painted brown tooth-shaped construction paper white with large toothbrushes.

The American Dental Association sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month each year to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

Fencer Finishes Career with Honors

Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Marcus Russo has been named one of the top two foils from Suffolk County and a member of the 2013 All-Long Island Fencing Team. The talented student-athlete has been a part of the combined Brentwood-Bayport-Blue Point Fencing Team for the past four years and has been an avid fencer since the age of 10. Marco finished this year’s season with a stellar record of only two losses and more than 30 wins. As part of the team, Marcus competed in the foil category, one of the sport’s three weapons of choice.

“Fencing piqued my interest after my mom Maureen brought it to my attention, and because it is more of a mental sport than a physical one,” said Marcus. “Just like with a game of chess, in fencing you have to focus on strategies, be able to anticipate your opponent’s moves and be ready to react quickly.”

In addition to his All-Long Island status, Marcus will be competing in this year’s All-County meet in late February and hopes to continue to practice fencing in the future, describing it as a “lifetime sport.” Based on regional qualifications, he will also be competing with the USA Fencing League during upcoming tournaments and continue his training at Mission Fencing in Rocky Point.

“Marcus deserves a lot of credit for all of the time and effort he puts into this sport,” stated Timothy Mullins, the district’s director of physical education, health and interscholastic sports, making special note that Marcus would need to travel to and from the Brentwood School District for his regular practices. “He is a terrific athlete and student, and he is much deserving of this honor.”

The combined fencing team, which is coached by Brentwood’s Mike Corona, finished this season with a winning 11-3 record and missed their chance at a run for the county title by only one point in a match against Ward Melville High School. At the end of the season, the team was ranked fifth on Long Island and the foil team was ranked second in their league after coming in second at the Huntington Relays.

Exploring Science

Sixth-grade students at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District have the chance to explore complex science topics in a very hands-on way as part of their participation in the school’s science research class. This past semester, in addition to their classroom studies, the students had the chance to select a topic of interest to them and design a scientific investigation to answer a question about that topic. The students’ completed projects were not only put on display for adoring family and friends to admire at an evening event, but also showcased during an in-school fair for the remainder of the grade to view and discuss with the budding scientists.

As part of their research, students explored topics including: whether lizards discriminate against certain colors in foods; which method of cooking has the least effect on vitamin C in the food; whether a person’s writing hand has an effect on how he or she selects colors from a lineup; whether a cat is more or less likely to react to a bird call if hungry; and the effects music has on an individual’s heart rate.

For his project on the effect of lenses and mirrors on solar panels, Brian Feddern was named the first-place winner in the school fair. His project, which focused on whether the power-producing capacity of solar panels can be increased if the light is passed through a magnifying lens or reflected off a mirror before hitting the solar panel, will now be entered into the Brookhaven National Lab science competition in May.

Celebrating Culture & the New Year

During a special in-school event, first-grade students in Tammy Santora’s class at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District not only celebrated the traditions of the Chinese New Year but also the culture of the countryside, thanks to a personal connection had by one of their classmates. With the help of her family, Jillian Kaler spoke with her peers about how she came to the United States at 18 months of age and discussed a bit about her native country’s culture – in particular, the items surrounding the Chinese New Year.

Throughout the workshop, the students learned about the different animals in the Chinese calendar, how 2013 is the Year of the Snake, and that red is a color representing good luck. They also had the chance to create colorful paper lanterns, dance a traditional dance alongside a giant dragon and sample some traditional Chinese dishes.

“As part of our social studies curriculum, the students learn about the different countries in the world and we go through a mini-unit specific to China,” stated Ms. Santora. “Today’s hands-on workshop brought those lessons to life and will help these students develop a greater appreciation of other countries and the cultural differences that exist within their community.”

Jumping for Heart Health

Blue Point Elementary School students demonstrated their commitment toward leading a heart-healthy lifestyle when they participated in the building’s annual Jump Rope for Heart event. This February, for the eighth consecutive year, the students learned different jump-roping techniques and tricks, along with the different components of heart health and fitness.

With the help of physical education teacher John Selvaggio, the students learned about how their heart works, how to take care of themselves through physical activity, and the importance of eating a balanced and nutritious diet. Additionally, taking a break from jumping, the elementary schoolers learned about individuals affected by cardiovascular disease and how, through their monthlong fundraising efforts, they can help to increase global awareness of this disease and raise funds for heart health research.

“The students learned not only about how they can make a personal change, but also that spreading the word about this cause is our best defense against heart-related illness,” stated Mr. Selvaggio.

Since partnering with the Jump Rope for Heart program, a fundraising initiative coordinated by the American Heart Association, the school has raised over $20,000 for medical research and families in need. Last year alone, the school raised an astounding $5,831 and was nominated as a top fundraising school in the northeast region of the United States.

Anyone interested in assisting the school with this year’s fundraising project is encouraged to visit the school’s team page by searching Blue Point Elementary on the website: heart.org/jump.

As a conclusion to a nonfiction reading unit, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School's fourth-grade students worked to embody the lives of the historical individuals they studied during a living wax museum event.

Leading up to the culminating event, the students selected a historical figure of interest to them, read their biography, and collected information on their life and worldly contributions, which they used to create a poster detailing their life. At the museum, the students dressed in costume to represent their chosen person and shared portions of their research with the family and friends in attendance. During the event, the students remained “frozen” until a visitor pushed their “activation button,” which caused them to come to life as their researched individual and deliver a short speech about their life.

The Physics of Toys

Bayport-Blue Point School District’s third-grade students in the enrichment program, PIE, had the chance to experience physics in action through hands-on activities and demonstrations using familiar and old-fashioned toys when a representative from the Long Island Science Center visited their class.

During the workshop, titled “The Physics of Toys,” the students experimented with the forces of gravity and inertia by observing and manipulating materials, forming and testing their own hypotheses. Breaking into groups, they designed demonstrations involving potential and kinetic energy. Using ramps, cars and spinning tops and poppers, they worked to prove or disprove their hypotheses and ultimately shared their findings with the class.

The students concluded the workshop with the clear understanding that potential energy is added by changing the position or condition of an object, and were eager to take home the toys they created to demonstrate the concept.

Science is EnLiGHTening in Fifth Grade!

The fifth grade students of Blue Point Elementary School became light experts during Science this trimester. Both fifth grade classes combined allowing the children the opportunity to work with every fifth grade teacher in small groups throughout this unit. The students even switched classrooms to simulate a middle school experience!

In a darkened library transformed into a Science laboratory, the students used a light source to perform experiments with white and colored light with Mrs. Mandell and Mrs. Loeffler. Mrs. Kleiber provided instruction on using a protractor and measuring angles to prepare the students to measure angles of reflection in the lab. Ms. Benedict reviewed and reinforced important vocabulary so the students had the background knowledge to understand the major concepts of reflection, refraction and dispersion.

The students were given opportunities to ask questions, make observations, manipulate materials, and think logically just like scientists do. It was also wonderful for the students to share common experiences while reading, speaking, and listening to others about what they were learning. Math was strongly integrated into this unit of study allowing the students to apply mathematical concepts within the context of a science experience. We hope that when the students reflect upon this experience they have only illuminating memories!

Shadowing Professionals

Looking to gain a deeper understanding of some of the potential careers that await them in the future, 50 Bayport-Blue Point High School sophomores participated in the school’s annual Job Shadow Day in early February. The program enables Bayport-Blue Point students to get an up-close look at what the “working world" is like and how the skills they learn in school can be put into action.

Working alongside business owner Michelle Gillette, BBP sophomore Katie Shelly had the chance to learn about gluten-free baking and even assist in making some of the Bayport-based Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet’s tasty treats. “This experience is something that I think all students should have before deciding what type of career path to explore in the future,” commented Katie. “My work at Ms. Michelle’s provided me with a better understanding about the ins and outs of the field and solidified my dream of pursuing a career in this field in the future.”

During this year’s Job Shadow Day, students also had the chance to work alongside of professionals at the district’s elementary and middle schools, Bayport Flower House, Brookhaven Hospital, Dowling College’s and Stony Brook University’s athletics departments, the Family Pet Clinic, the Fish Store, Future Tech Enterprise, Little Angels physical therapy office, and the Suffolk County Police Department’s 5th Precinct.

A Birdie Soars in Bayport-Blue Point

BBP High School Students Perform in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’

From the opening overture to the final curtain call, the more than 100-student member production of “Bye Bye Birdie” at Bayport-Blue Point High School was a sure hit with audiences of all ages when it debuted in early February. The satire of American society transported audiences back to the simpler time of 1958 and followed the lives of heartthrob rock star Conrad Birdie and the townsfolk of Sweet Apple, Ohio, where Conrad visits before joining the Army. The talented BBP student-actors and primarily student-musician orchestra dazzled audiences with such familiar songs as “Put on a Happy Face” and “The Telephone Hour,” clearly indicating the months of preparation the cast put into making this year’s musical a tremendous success.

Audiences still have the chance to catch this year’s production, as the show will run Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 7, 8 and 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens and $12 for adults. Tickets can be purchased in Room 326 at the high school or by contacting the art and music department office at 631-472-7809.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Witches, a wizard and a colorful cast of characters were front and center as the fourth-grade students in Nancy Celentano’s class performed the beloved play “The Wizard of Oz” at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. The performance came as a fitting conclusion to a literary study on the book and movie of the same name.

To prepare for their theatrical debut, the class put in months of preparation studying the original classic novel by L. Frank Baum and comparing and contrasting it to the movie version. Reading scripts during their Reader’s Theatre study, the students practiced speaking with expression and learning about the different roles in the production. With the help of some parent volunteers and their teacher, the class crafted beautiful scenery pieces and tirelessly practiced the different musical numbers.

During their two-show debut, the students took to the stage to perform the nearly one-hour play before audiences filled with family and friends.

Warming Hearts This Winter

Academy Street Elementary School’s Peer Leaders have been working to provide some warmth to those less fortunate this winter by collecting piles of gently used coats from the school’s students, faculty and staff. To drum up excitement for it, the organization’s members created colorful signs and banners that were displayed throughout the school prior to the two-week drive. As a result of the overwhelming contributions made by individuals in the building, the school donated three buckets filled with coats to the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters chapter. Pictured here are several Peer Leaders with their collected donations.

Embracing the relaxation techniques of the ancient Indian exercise form, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students have been engaged in a unique physical education unit centered on yoga. During the week-long introduction study, the students learned about the origins of yoga, several different yoga poses as well as the benefits this lifetime activity has on the mind, body and soul.

“Yoga has something for everyone, no matter what age or skill level, and that is perfect for a physical education environment,” stated physical education teacher Jessica Richford. “The benefits of practicing yoga are increased strength and flexibility, in addition to prevention of injury and increased mental focus.”

DECA Team Members Advance to States

Looking to build upon their impressive record from last year, Bayport-Blue Point High School’s DECA chapter commenced this year’s competition season with a strong victory.

In early January the team tested their knowledge against their peers from neighboring school districts as they competed in the annual DECA regional competition at Suffolk Community College’s Ammerman campus. As a result of their performance at this competition, six Bayport-Blue Point High School students – Ryan Ball, Emily Larsson, Patrick Liu, Victoria Mercouris, Jonathan Panetta and Chandler Varone – qualified for the New York State DECA competition, which will be held March 5-8 in Rochester, N.Y. Impressively, out of the six students who qualified, two (Liu and Panetta) finished among the top three of their category.

DECA is an interscholastic business organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

A Lesson from the Past

The life and struggles of 19th century escaped slave and public activist Frederick Douglass came to life before the eyes of James Wilson Young Middle School’s seventh-graders when they attended an interactive assembly program in the school’s auditorium. Actor Frederick Morsell has been traveling the country as Mr. Douglass since the late 1980s, speaking with hundreds of students and adults about race relations, gender equality and the events of Mr. Douglass’ life.

During the assembly, the students mentally traveled back in time to a period when slavery was still legal in America and prevalent in every American’s everyday life. Throughout the program, the students had the chance to learn about this historic time period from Mr. Morsell’s first-person narrative, which detailed the upbringing of Mr. Douglass in the South and how he transformed himself from a slave to a free man. The students were captivated by the program’s messages and the unique historical perspective it provided and left instilled with the mission to take advantage of every opportunity provided to them.

Helping Save Lives, One Pint at a Time

Did you know that it takes only five to 10 minutes to potentially save three lives? That was just one of the statistics learned by James Wilson Young Middle School seventh-graders when they attended the New York Blood Services Little Doctors program at their school. As a complement to their science curriculum on body systems, and as a fitting kickoff to the community blood drive held at the school later in the month, the students attended a presentation by Blood Services representative Marty Scharf to learn more about the body’s circulatory system.

During the presentation, Mr. Scharf spoke about why blood cannot be artificially manufactured, the functions of the different components of blood, and the importance of type testing as well as the testing that is performed on donated blood to ensure its safety.

Acting as information specialists, the students were charged with sharing the facts they learned with their family members and discussing the importance of qualified adults becoming donors. During the school’s drive, which is scheduled for Jan. 30 from 3:15 to 9 pm and open to the community, the students will volunteer at service stations to provide paperwork and post-donation treats to those who give blood.

Showing Support with Snowflakes

Several classes at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District worked to brighten the halls of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School by joining forces with schools across country for a snowflake project. Working with art teacher Carly Gayer and the support of the school’s PTA, the students created hundreds of one-of-a-kind snowflakes using a variety of art supplies and techniques.

Some students painted large specialty papers with interesting color schemes that were cut into extra-large snowflakes while other classes used crayons and watercolor paints to make symmetrical snowflake designs. A large number of 3-D snowflakes were also created using popsicle sticks, multicolored markers, glitter and gemstones.

In total, the school created approximately 200 colorful, creative and beautiful snowflakes. The building’s PTA shipped the box to the Connecticut school with friendship, love and support.

Providing Resources to the Homeless

Recognizing that those less fortunate are not only in need of assistance during the holiday season but all year long, the National Honor Society at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently concluded a personal care product drive for the homeless in Suffolk County. The students have been hosting such a collection for the past three years, the past two of which provided hygiene care packs to more than 550 homeless adults and children.

“Homelessness is a problem that is not limited to communities far away from ours,” NHS adviser Donna Edgar stated. “It affects individuals as close as our own neighborhoods – something that is often shocking for our students to learn.” Reflecting on how Superstorm Sandy put even greater pressure on the already limited resources available to those in need, Ms. Edgar noted that this year’s collection drive was of great importance.

Teaming up with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, the students inspired their peers to donate personal hygiene products – toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo and washcloths – during their homeroom periods. Thanks to the support of the school’s students and staff, this year the NHS members were able collect more than 1,000 items and create more than 200 care packages for the county’s homeless.

“Currently there are 225 homeless individuals in the county. The students’ efforts will provide enough resources to assist almost our entire homeless individual population,” stated Department of Social Services representative Cate Clifford. “We often think about giving to others during the holiday season, but as these individuals’ personal struggles continue all year long, it is important to continue to remember to help them during the other times of the year.”

Academy Street Welcomes Back Returning Classmate

The start of 2013 was especially significant for the students at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, as on Jan. 2 they welcomed back one of their own – fifth-grader Marco Daidone, who has been out of school since last March recovering from osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Upon his arrival to the school, Marco was greeted by a sea of cheering classmates and friends. Holding paper signs to welcome Marco back were his grade-level peers, along with the second-grade classmates of his brother Vincent. Having undergone several procedures and surgeries during his time away from school, Marco proudly returned to Academy Street stronger and, best of all, cancer-free.

“I am really happy to be back at school and back with my friends, and I’m looking forward to doing some work in my new classroom,” said Marco. “I was pretty shocked and embarrassed to see all of my classmates and brother’s classmates outside when I arrived here this morning, but at the same time I was really excited.”

As the school’s students settled back into their studies following the holiday recess, their smiles and warm wishes for Marco hung in the air as collectively, all of Academy Street looks forward to a happy New Year.

Buzzing Around BBP

Bayport-Blue Point School District students demonstrate their knowledge and know-how daily, both during classroom lessons and in school-sponsored activities. This winter, many district elementary students had the opportunity to test their geography and spelling knowledge against their peers during school-sponsored bees.

At Academy Street Elementary School, the building’s fourth- and fifth-graders participated in the National Geographic Bee. During the contest, which went for seven challenging rounds before entering into a tie-breaker, the students were asked questions dealing with scenic trails, state borders and key geographic landmarks. This year’s winner was Matthew Stawecki, who will now advance to the written level of the competition in January.

Blue Point Elementary School fourth- and fifth-grade students participated in the school-level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students participated in class bees and winners qualified to compete at the school level. After several grueling rounds of competition, Blue Point’s Christopher Roedel was named this year’s school spelling bee winner.

The older students helped their younger peers trace their hands and feet onto construction paper, cut them out and assemble the crafty reindeer. The pairs completed their Rudolph look-a-likes with googly eyes and red glitter.

The school’s kindergarten students also performed their annual holiday show, which was complete with a few traditional Christmas and holiday songs.

All Aboard!

The Polar Express rolled into town at Academy Street Elementary School in late December, calling aboard the school’s first-grade students for a fun and unique English language arts assignment. After having their tickets received by “conductor” and music teacher Jim Cesare and Principal Kerry Vann, the students gathered in the cafeteria to listen as Ms. Vann read aloud the familiar holiday tale. The beautiful pictures from the story were projected on a white screen in the room in order for the students to better visualize the story’s messages. Just as in the book, the students were treated to a cup of hot cocoa and a snack after the read-a-loud was complete.

As an in-class follow-up activity, the students compared the written story to its movie counterpart by creating a Venn diagram that illustrated the similarities and differences between the two formats. They also completed a writing assignment that focused on their experiences and the messages of the book.

A Season of Giving

Throughout the month of December, district students and staff members engaged in a wide range of community service activities and collection drives. As a result of their collective generosity and warm hearts, this holiday season will be made a little brighter for many Long Island families.

At Academy Street Elementary School, the peer leaders put their creativity to the test and fashioned original handmade holiday cards for the senior citizens living at a local facility in East Islip. During their early morning meeting, the students wrote messages of hope and holiday wishes in their colorfully decorated cards.

As part of a Giving Tree program, Blue Point Elementary School students and staff members selected paper ornaments listing a person’s age, gender and a wished-for item and helped to grant those individuals’ wishes this holiday. Additionally, continuing with their work to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy, the students participated in a Kids Helping Kids program. Students donated items such as hats, gloves and health supplies that began with the first letter of their last name, to this worthy cause.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students once again participated in The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. Through the program, the students donated new sets of pajamas to which Scholastic Book Club matched each pair with a book and donated the set to the Pajama Program National Headquarters. The pajamas and books were then distributed by the program to children in need throughout the country. Additionally, as part of Operation Sandy Clause, Sylvan Avenue students created holiday stockings for families who are recovering from Hurricane Sandy. The completed stockings included a wide range of toiletry items.

James Wilson Young Middle School students in Bob Donarummo’s Introduction to Technology class, used hand and electric tools to construct approximately 90 7-inch tall wooden teddy bears for the Lighthouse Mission, a mission facility in Patchogue that helps to feed the hungry and help the homeless. The project, which was coordinated as part of the class’s Mass Production of Goods unit of study, helped to reinforce the lessons the students were learning about the production process.

Bayport-Blue Point High School’s student council organized a schoolwide holiday drive for the individuals at John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility in Yaphank. Soliciting donations off the residents’ wish lists as well as gift cards, the student council collected and sorted the large number of donations before delivering the packages to the residents just before the holiday break.

Helping Children Cope with Connecticut Tragedy

On Friday, December 14th, the unimaginable occurred in Connecticut. As parents, we will struggle with how to shield our children from the images and news of this tragedy, a task that becomes more difficult given the accessibility and speed at which news travels. Understandably, many students will have difficulty coping with the details of this tragic event, not only tomorrow, but in the coming days and weeks as well. The following are some helpful resources to use as you begin to speak with your children about the horrific events that took place:

Working Together to Promote Literacy & Character Education

Through a collaborative learning partnership, the students at Blue Point Elementary School have been learning about character education and the importance of literacy in new and exciting ways. For the past three years, members of the Sayville Rotary Club have been visiting a different grade level each month to conduct a “read aloud” and speak to the students about a specific character trait. School library media specialist Susan Brinkman and Rotary Club member Chestine Coverdale coordinated the initiative, which is called the Character Education Through Literature Reading Program.

In early December, Rotarian Eleanor Duncker visited with the school’s second-graders to speak about the importance of being honest and share the Gary Soto story “Too Many Tamales.” As a follow-up, the students completed reflective writing assignments in which they described a specific time when they were honest and drew an artistic depiction of that event. As a special component to the program, students involved in Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Interact Club, a division of the Rotary Club, have also taken to visiting the school as part of this character-building experience.

Authors Visit Sparks Collection Drive for Pets

After receiving a visit by author Heather Worthington and learning about the interesting travels the dog in her story “Miles of Smiles” took, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students decided to coordinate a supply drive for some of the most helpless victims of Hurricane Sandy – the pets.

During the “Paws for a Cause” drive, students donated a wide variety of supplies, including dog and cat food, cat litter, bones, treats, towels and blankets. The items collected were given to the nonprofit animal rescue organization Guardians of Rescue, a group that has been actively involved in providing shelter, supplies and veterinary care for the furry victims of the hurricane.

Walking Across America

Third- through fifth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in Bayport are working to walk the thousands of miles it would take to travel from their school to sunny California as they participate in the building’s Mileage Club. The program, which runs outdoors during recess time, has been warmly received by the students who are walking many miles each day.

The students are responsible for charting their mileage and submitting the results to the school’s physical education teachers. For every five miles that the walkers log, they receive a plastic “foot” tag to proudly affix to their shoelaces. The results of the school’s collective mileage are regularly charted on a bulletin board outside the cafeteria. In addition to the total miles completed to date, the board also displays interesting facts about the current city and state the student-walkers have reached.

Spelling Bee Champ

After countless hours of preparation, James Wilson Young Middle School students took to the auditorium stage in late November to participate in this year’s semifinal round of the school spelling bee. Before their cheering classmates, the class winners, representing their homerooms, competed against peers in their grade levels during the schoolwide assembly.

Sixth-grader Lillian Horne, seventh-grader Adoni Karpathakis and eighth-grader Peter Drago were named the champion spellers of their grade levels after correctly spelling “primitive,” “gargoyle” and “dormition,” respectively. Going head-to-head, the three students competed for the ultimate title of schoolwide spelling champion. With the correct spelling of “tentacle,” Adoni was named the 2012 champion and will now advance to the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee in February.

The historical importance and key facts about each of the nation’s 50 states were on display for all to see during this year’s fifth-grade “state fair” at Blue Point Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District.

In preparation for the annual event, the students researched their assigned state and created presentation boards on which they described the state’s unique identifiers, such as its seal, flag, bird, geographic location and famous individuals who were born there, in addition to its general climate and population. The completed boards were put on display in the school’s cafeteria for the fair attendees to enjoy. The project offered students a hands-on and in-depth approach to studying their researched state, as well as the other states in the nation.

Celebrating Literacy

As a culmination of their fall writing activities, the first-grade students in Mrs. Magee’s class at Blue Point Elementary School participated in a Fancy Nancy Writing Celebration. Since the start of the year, the students have been focused on learning about personal narratives and practicing this writing technique during their literacy work. After completing draft-writing assignments, the students had the chance to visit the classroom’s ‘fancy word wall’ to not only help strengthen their vocabulary, but also to see if there were any new descriptive words they could incorporate into their original compositions.

During the celebration, the students shared their fall leaf poems, essays on their families’ Thanksgiving traditions and pieces centered on the theme of hope, which they created following Hurricane Sandy as a way of describing what hope means to them.

Extending a Helping Hand

BBP Schools Work to Assist Families in Need

The holiday season is often a difficult one for those struggling, a fact that has become even more apparent this year as many Long Islanders find themselves in need of assistance due in large part to the recent hurricane. Looking to help those in the local communities as well as ones in far-reaching neighborhoods, the Bayport-Blue Point School District coordinated several relief efforts in November. From food to supply drives, district students and staff members once again demonstrated the caring nature of the schools.

Academy Street Elementary School peer leaders coordinated a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit local residents. As the school received an overwhelming amount of donations, the students not only created Thanksgiving baskets for local families but also boxes filled with food and supplies for members of their surrounding community gravely affected by Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, the students in Tammy Santora’s class also created bags of well wishes and supply items for individuals living in shelters as a result of the hurricane. The bags were filled with gift cards and a variety of personal hygiene items. As part of Operation Shoebox, the students in Carrie Almskog’s class created shoeboxes filled will toiletries and other supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The students creatively decorated the boxes and donated the filled creations to the high school’s collection effort.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fifth-grade students in Ursula Camenzuli’s and Alexandra Sulton’s classes decorated pillowcases and filled the creative sacks with personal care items for Long Island Cares, an organization collecting items for Long Islanders affected by the recent storm.

Blue Point Elementary School students coordinated a food drive, which called for donations of non-perishable food items for local residents in need this holiday season.

James Wilson Young Middle School student council members coordinated a food drive for Our Lady of the Snow Church and the Patchogue Soup Kitchen. The students collected hundreds of nonperishable canned and boxed goods during the weeklong drive. Additionally, the school’s National Junior Honor Society coordinated a school supply drive for the Scholars’ Academy, a school in Rockaway Park, N.Y. devastated by the hurricane. JWY students collected backpacks and filled them with pencils, pens, index cards, construction paper and an assortment of other school supplies for their fellow New York students. Their effort made an even greater impact thanks to a $425 monetary collection, $100 of which was donated by the Bayport-Blue Point Teachers Association.

Bayport-Blue Point High School staff and students also worked to ease the pain felt by the surrounding community as a result of the hurricane. During a two-day collection drive, the school was open to interested parties who wanted to drop off food, clothing or other supplies for local families affected by the superstorm. During their lunch periods, students volunteered at the drop-off site to help sort and organize the donations.

Lending a Hand to Make an Impact
Bayport-Blue Point High School’s iLead class—a student elective course focused on teaching students to acquire leadership skills through hands-on projects—recently coordinated a unique fund-raising project that truly embodied the term “hands-on.” After learning of the devastating effects that the recent hurricane had on their neighboring communities, the class rallied together to help make a difference for the victims of the superstorm—more specifically, those families in the Lindenhurst School District.

iLeader Bob Mischo painted an outline of Long Island on a canvas along with the words “When strength is needed, look to those around you.” It was on this canvas that the school’s students—for a dollar or two donation—could make an imprint of their hand to symbolize the support they were showing for their fellow Long Islanders. As a result of the school’s generosity, the iLeaders collected more than $300 for an elementary school in the Lindenhurst School District and will be donating the completed canvas to that school as a constant reminder of the friends they have in Bayport-Blue Point.

As many of their peers are just beginning the process for selecting what college or university to attend post graduation, three Bayport-Blue Point High School student-athletes have not only already made that commitment but have also been afforded the chance to continue to perform in the sport they love – lacrosse. This fall, Brian Ward, Billy Baker and Kaitlyn Leahy all signed National Letters of Intent with some of the nation’s premier colleges and universities.

“This achievement is indicative of the work these students have completed at the youth, interscholastic and varsity levels as well as the commitment they demonstrated in the classroom. Not only are these schools known for their athletic programs but they are also recognized as fantastic academic institutions,” stated District Director of Physical Education, Health and Interscholastic Sports Timothy Mullins

With their proud family members looking on, Brian signed with Ohio State, where he will play on the boys lacrosse team; Billy signed with Stevens Tech, where he will play on the boys lacrosse team; and Kaitlyn will be a member of the girls lacrosse team at Stony Brook University.

Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Christian Szajna and Jill Keenan have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. As Commended Students, the two were recognized for the exceptional academic promise they demonstrated on the qualifying test used to enter the program.

“It is a true honor to receive such a prestigious award,” stated Christian. “This is a testament to all of the hard work we have put into our studies over the years,” added Jill.

Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, being named a Commended Student recognizes that Christian and Jill placed among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2011 PSAT/NMSQT.

Students Cast Their Vote in Mock Presidential Election

Bayport-Blue Point elementary school students had the chance to take part in special mock elections at their schools this Election Day. Just as their parents and registered voters across the nation took to the polls, the students considered the issues at hand and voted to elect either President Barack Obama or Governor Mitt Romney to the new presidential term.

At Academy Street, the building’s fourth-grade students provided an overview of the democratic process before turning the stage over to their fifth-grade peers, who assumed the roles of the presidential and vice presidential candidates for a mock town hall-style debate. During the event, which was attended by the school’s third-graders, the speakers addressed several of the issues facing the nation as well as each candidate’s stance on these matters. At the close of the debate, every student in the school had a chance to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice in voting booths created by the students in Rachel Kelly’s LEAP class.

Using voter cards complete with their school pictures, Sylvan Avenue students also had the chance to vote in a mock presidential election. During their lunch periods, the students experienced the voting process from start to finish – they signed their names on a voting roster, filled out their ballot forms in privacy and submitted their votes. This was the first time the school hosted a mock election, and it was met with resounding enthusiasm from the students.

In individual classrooms, several Blue Point Elementary students were given the chance to participate in the voting process as well, casting their votes for either the democratic or republican presidential candidates.

Unlike the results of the national election, all three Bayport-Blue Point elementary schools voted to elect Mitt Romney as the 44th President of the United States.

Favorite Children’s Character Goes to Trial

Portraying a cast of characters typically found in the pages of classic children’s stories, fifth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District participated in a mock trial program in which the well-known fictional character Goldilocks was charged with trespassing in the second degree, criminal mischief and petit larceny for disrupting the family of the three bears. This project was an extension of the fifth-grade curriculum about the legal system and the culmination of several in-class workshops run by program creator Glen Vogel.

As the famous story goes, a young girl named Goldilocks travels through the home of the three bears sampling their food and disturbing – and in some cases destroying – their property along the way. During the mock trial, which put a twist on the familiar tale, the students played the roles of Goldilocks, prosecutors and defense attorneys, character witnesses, the three bears and witnesses for the prosecution, such as the Big Bad Wolf. For the event, the school’s gym was turned into a replica courtroom, complete with a judge, bailiff and fourth-grade students acting as jurors. To make the trial realistic, students were introduced to courtroom language and learned how the court system functions.

In the end, Goldilocks was found guilty on several accounts and the trial proved to be a valuable learning experience for all of the students involved.

James Wilson Young Middle School eighth-grade students received a hands-on lesson in teamwork and cooperation this fall when they took part in the school’s annual trip to the YMCA outdoor education camp, Frost Valley. During the four-day excursion, the students were able to participate in a variety of outdoor activities, including rock wall climbing, Project Adventure, low ropes course training, hiking, canoeing, Native American art and games, apple cider making, exploring nature at the pond and in the woods, and touring the house on the property. The students also heard a presentation from the camp’s “Birdman,” who showed the eighth-graders birds native to the Catskill region and spoke about their unique traits.

Power Restored to Academy St. - Regular School Nov. 5th

Dear Academy Street Families,
This afternoon, November 4, 2012, the power was restored to Academy Street Elementary School. With this development, the district is able to cancel our contingency plan, allowing the students of Academy Street to return to their home school and regular routines. This means that school will begin at its regular time and My Kids and morning programs will all be in session. I do realize that many Academy Street families may still not have power, so please share this message with those families with whom you may be communicating. I look forward to seeing all of the children tomorrow and hope that getting back to familiar routines will help those families who are still in the process of recovering from the storm. Enjoy the remainder of the day; stay safe and stay warm.
Sincerely,
Kerry Vann

In celebration of Make a Difference Day, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s Peer Leaders brought smiles to the residents at Petit Fleur Nursing Home in Sayville at the end of October. During their visit, the students read their favorite storybooks to the residents, presented them with pictures and cards they had created and spent time interviewing them about their childhoods. The school’s Peer Leaders program is advised by Erin Miller and Cindy Ventimiglia.

Red Ribbon Week Sparks Conversations

Red ribbons tied around the large trees lining the front of Bayport-Blue Point High School marked the commencement of Red Ribbon Week at the school in late October. During the weeklong program, the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club decorated the building with informational signs listing key statistics about drug and alcohol use, sold red ribbons during lunch periods to promote awareness, arranged for an actual car involved in a drunk driving accident to be placed on school grounds and coordinated the school’s annual Grim Reaper Day. Throughout this day, students were chosen at random by a student “Grim Reaper” to have their faces painted white and appear as ghosts – a symbolic way of representing the alarming statistic of how often a life is lost in a drunk driving accident.

Additionally, the school’s students and parent community had the chance to listen to a presentation by Bob Petrocelli. In his program, “10 Seconds,” Mr. Petrocelli shared the story of his tragic experience with a drunk driver and motivated the audiences to realize the power that their decisions have and the importance of building a strong foundation for their lives.

Phantoms Score Winning Homecoming!

Sunny skies and cheering fans were the order of the day during this year’s homecoming festivities in the Bayport-Blue Point School District as the community came together in mid-October to support their hometown Phantoms.

Lining the streets leading to the high school, parade-goers sported their blue and gold and watched as community fire trucks, student musicians, the high school marching band, class floats (decorated to represent the homecoming theme of “Seasons”), and students from the elementary and middle schools carrying school banners made their way to the football stadium.

Prior to kickoff, the seniors from the varsity football team and cheerleading squad took to the field with their parents as a way to honor their parents and recognize all of the years they have dedicated to their student-athlete children. Students Bob Vetri and Delaney Miller were also named this year’s homecoming king and queen.

The opposing team from Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island proved to be no competition for the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms as they took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and finished the game 21-7.

Passing, Punting and Kicking Their Way to the NFL

Academy Street Elementary School students demonstrated that they have what it takes to be members of the National Football League during a recent competition held in their physical education classes. The school was selected this year to be one of only a few local competition sites for the 2012 NFL-sponsored Pass, Punt and Kick Competition.

During their physical education classes, the schools third-, fourth- and fifth- graders had the chance to pass, punt and kick like professional football stars in hopes of advancing to the Long Island Sectional Championships. The male and female students from each age group who had the highest combined scores -- Meg Brockbank, Zander Katsalas, Alexis Niblock and Kaden Smith -- were selected to advance and will next test their abilities against other winners from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the Long Island Sectional Championships in Oyster Bay. Should one of these four be selected to advance beyond the second level of competition, they will have the chance to compete in the state championship at Met Life Stadium and then possibly the national championship during the NFL playoffs.

BBP HS Eagle Scout Dedicates New Student Patio in Memory of Former Teacher

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, the Bayport-Blue Point School District’s open campus policy was revised to limit off-campus access to senior class students only. Looking to create a place for underclassmen to enjoy on warm school days, then-junior Chandler Varone – also an active Boy Scout with local Troop 329 – set out to create an outdoor patio space for his fellow peers to enjoy as part of his Eagle Scout project.

After the untimely passing of beloved high school business teacher Doug Monsell, Chandler announced that he would be dedicating the completed patio in honor of Mr. Monsell and would use the project to help raise funds for the college educations of Mr. Monsell’s two young daughters. In early October 2012, with Mr. Monsell’s friends and family as well as district administrators, Board of Education members and fellow students surrounding him, Chandler, now a senior, cut the ceremonial ribbon on the project.

“I remember walking into my second-period class on the first day of my freshman year and looking up at Mr. Monsell and thinking, wow, this guy is really happy,” recalled Chandler. ”He always had a smile from ear to ear no matter what the situation and it was because of his attitude and his love for his career that I wanted to get more involved in the activities he was involved in.” A member of the school’s award-winning DECA club, of which Mr. Monsell was the adviser, Chandler shared the project idea with his teacher and received a great deal of encouragement.

At first he did not have a cause in mind to dedicate his project to, but Chandler explained that this changed after Mr. Monsell’s passing. “My project then became of utmost importance in my life because someone who played such a huge part in helping to shape my high school career had tragically passed away,” he said. “I decided then that my project was the best way that I could truly honor him.”

Chandler sought donations for his project and invited the community to purchase engravable bricks in Mr. Monsell’s honor. Surplus funds totaling $6,204 will be donated to an educational fund set up in Mr. Monsell’s honor with the goal of providing college tuition for his children. The patio is approximately 15 feet by 25 feet and includes several benches and tables.
During the ceremony, high school jazz choir students performed several selections and high school Principal Dr. Timothy Hearney and Board President James March shared their fond memories of Mr. Monsell and commended Chandler for his actions.

Journeying Back in Time

As a kickoff to their study on the first Americans, fourth-grade students at Academy Street Elementary School had an opportunity to learn about Native Americans during a hands-on workshop. The program, Journey into Native American Territory, brought the history and lives of the Eastern Woodlands people into the classroom through visual presentations and group activities.

Students began the day of exploration by watching a video about Native Americans and crafting clay pots using traditional techniques and materials. Following the art project, the students visited a museum of artifacts that included animal pelts, musical instruments, traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools. They also each took a turn grounding corn, touring a replica longhouse and playing the games of Native American children, which encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills.

Before concluding the day, the fourth-graders had the chance to take part in a simulated election activity that reinforced the lessons they learned throughout the day.

Walking & Promoting Wellness

Community members might have noticed a few less cars on the roads around Academy Elementary School in early October as the building’s students participated in the 2012 National Walk to School Day. The annual event encourages students and their families to forgo traditional means of transportation and either walk or ride a bicycle to school. In addition to the environmental benefits associated with the event, it has been known to promote physical activity as well as reinforce lessons on pedestrian and bicycling safety.

“Although we are largely a walking community, several students did mention that today was the first time they ever walked to school,” stated Principal Kerry Vann. “The event was a great way for us to reinforce the importance of healthy living and wellness with our students. We look forward to participating in the program again and hope even more families are able to join us.”

This year’s walk was coordinated by the school’s health and safety committee.

District Appoints, Welcomes New Superintendent

The Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education has appointed Dr. Vincent Butera as the district’s new superintendent of schools. The appointment was made during a special meeting of the Board on October 2nd and was immediately followed by an informal meet-and-greet with district residents. Approximately 50 attendees, including community members and district staff members, were in attendance to welcome Dr. Butera to the district and speak with him about his vision for the schools.

“It truly pleases me and the Board of Education to announce the conclusion of our search for the district’s next superintendent of schools,” stated Board President James March during the meeting. Mr. March went on to provide a brief overview of Dr. Butera’s educational experience before signing the official contract documentation and concluding the meeting for the reception.

Just prior to his appointment, Dr. Butera stated, “I want to thank the Board of Education for this incredible opportunity. Bayport-Blue Point is a district that is well-regarded by its community and many on the outside, and I look forward to building upon this tradition of success by helping every child succeed to the highest level. My efforts are guided by my belief that schools must develop students who possess the social, emotional and academic skills to succeed beyond high school, and I certainly sensed that same commitment to ensuring student success from the Board of Education."

Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education Taps Dr. Vincent Butera as New Superintendent of Schools

Community invited to informal meet-and-greet on October 2 at 8 p.m.

After an expansive search that attracted dozens of inquiries and a large number of impressive applicants, the Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education will appoint Dr. Vincent Butera as the district’s new superintendent of schools at a special meeting on Tuesday, October 2, 2012. The Board will call the special meeting to order at 8 p.m. in the high school cafeteria for the sole purpose of adopting the contract with Dr. Butera. After the meeting, there will be a cake and coffee reception, and the community will have an opportunity to speak with Dr. Butera informally. All interested community members are encouraged to attend and help mark the beginning of this exciting new chapter for the Bayport-Blue Point Schools.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Butera, a well-respected educator, to the Bayport-Blue Point School District,” said Board President James March. “He is a true academic leader and we are confident he will serve our district well as its new superintendent. It was clear during the recruitment process that Dr. Butera possesses the wide-ranging skill set needed to continue to push our district toward achieving and maintaining the high academic standards we have come to expect here in Bayport-Blue Point.”

“I want to thank the Board of Education for this incredible opportunity,” said Dr. Butera. “Bayport-Blue Point is a district that is well-regarded by its community and many on the outside, and I look forward to building upon this tradition of success by helping every child succeed to the highest level. My efforts are guided by my belief that schools must develop students who possess the social, emotional and academic skills to succeed beyond high school, and I certainly sensed that same commitment to ensuring student success from the Board of Education."

It is expected that Dr. Butera will begin work on December 1, 2012, but no later than January 1, 2013, pending the conclusion of his work in Long Beach. The contract will run through June 30, 2016. He will be paid an annual salary of $218,000, which is fixed for the first three years of the contract.

In late spring, the Board of Education began working with the professional recruitment team at Eastern Suffolk BOCES to cultivate and screen candidates for the district’s superintendency. The Board ultimately interviewed nine finalists for the position, reduced that number to four, and, by unanimous vote, chose Dr. Butera to fill the position.

Dr. Butera has been an educator for almost 20 years, the past three of which he has worked in the Long Beach School District as its assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. During his time in Long Beach, Dr. Butera was widely credited for the district’s notable growth in student achievement. Among the factors contributing to Long Beach’s success were the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, the execution of policies and practices that resulted in a doubling of the district’s college-level offerings and a 40 percent increase in the number of students taking college-level classes, as well as a marked increase in college acceptance rates. Furthermore, with a strong focus on expanding opportunities for students at the middle school level, the district saw significant increases in the number of middle school students taking accelerated science and math courses and a nearly 100 percent passing rate on Regents exams for these courses. Dr. Butera also served successfully and with commendation as chairperson of the Long Beach Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) Committee.

In addition to his administrative experience in Long Beach, Dr. Butera has also worked as a principal, assistant principal and social studies teacher. Furthermore, for two years he served as an assistant professor in Dowling College’s department of educational administration, leadership and technology. Dr. Butera’s work has been published in two professional publications.

In recognition of his dedication to the field of education, Dr. Butera has been recognized by several state and local organizations, including the New York State Office of Human Rights for Character Education. He is also a contributing member of the Nassau County Association of District Curriculum Officials, the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Staff Development Council.

Dr. Butera graduated with honors from Queens College with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He also earned a Master of Science with honors in special education from Queens College. He holds a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Hofstra University and a doctoral degree in educational administration, leadership and technology from Dowling College.

Student-Musicians Selected for All-County Music Festival

Several Bayport-Blue Point High School students have been selected to participate in the upcoming 2012 NYSCAME/SCMEA All-County Music Festival. Congratulations to Diane Barba (mixed chorus), Matthew Beyer (symphonic band), Jessica Brine (women’s chorus), Taylor Cosci (mixed chorus), Erin Dougherty (symphony orchestra), Alex Dura (symphonic band), Zahrie Ernst (symphony orchestra), Megan Gallagher (women’s chorus), Mary Horan (symphony orchestra), Jennifer Mazzio (symphony orchestra), Bennett Salvesen (mixed chorus and symphony orchestra) and Bridget Schuster (mixed chorus).

The festival, which will be held this year at Northport High School in mid-November, draws thousands of submissions annually. Last spring these students worked diligently to prepare solos at the NYSSMA All-State level. They were adjudicated during a NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival this past May and earned high-achieving scores due to their hard work and dedication to the study of music. These scores earned the students a spot in this year’s All-County concert band, mixed chorus, women’s chorus or symphony orchestra.

“On behalf of the music department, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Bayport-Blue Point High School music students that have been selected to participate in the 2012 NYSCAME/SCMEA All-County Festival,” stated Music and Art Chairperson Paul Weber. “Being chosen to participate in this festival is a highly coveted honor and one that recognizes the students as among the best musicians in the county. The district is most proud of these students’ accomplishments.”

BBP HS Named Reward School by NYS

New York State Education Commissioner John King recently commended Bayport-Blue Point High School for its academic achievements and designated the school as a “Reward School” in New York State. The State Education Department bestowed these awards based on high student performance on state assessments, graduation rates and overall academic progress.

“It is always nice to be recognized as a school, but I must say this recognition belongs to the teachers and entire staff of the Bayport-Blue Point High School. They are an extraordinary group of professionals who truly care and want only the best for the students that they work with and interact with on a daily basis,” noted Principal Timothy Hearney. “I must also congratulate and thank our students, not only for the effort they give every single day, but because they are always looking to challenge themselves more and more. I would also be remiss if I did not thank our parents, because without their support and willingness to work as a collaborative team our jobs would be that much more difficult. I am extremely proud to be principal of the Bayport-Blue Point High School.”

Commenting on the rigorous requirements the high school met in order to achieve this honor, Interim Superintendent of Schools Neil Lederer explained, “The recognition is an indication that subgroups within our student body are making annual yearly progress, and that we are in the top 20 percent of high schools in our state in English language arts and mathematics. It also reflects our high number of Regents diploma recipients and those receiving that diploma with ‘advanced’ designation. As superintendent, I could not be prouder.”

Along with this designation, the school is now eligible to compete for a Commissioner’s Schools Dissemination Grant of up to $150,000 to further advance students’ educational opportunities.

The 2012-2013 school year commenced on Wednesday, September 5 in the
Bayport-Blue Point School District as new and returning students
filtered into the district’s five schools. With enrollment teetering at
2,451, the schools were bustling with activity from the time the first
bell rang at Bayport-Blue Point High School to the sound of dismissal at
each of the elementary schools. Although the weather was cloudy and
rainy at times, the students’ acclimation back to school was flawless.

Preparing for a New Year with New Laws

Superintendent’s Conference Days and Summer Workshops Focus on New Requirements

Bayport-Blue Point teachers and administrators dedicated a great deal of time prior to the first day of school preparing for the implementation of two new state laws – the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) system and the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA).

APPR is a New York State educational law that calls for each school district in the state to create a measurable review plan to assess the performance of its teachers and administrators, and to have that plan approved by the state and in place by January 2013. The district has been preparing for the execution of this law for the past several months and focused this summer on its implementation.

The plan breaks each individual’s review into three categories - student growth, student achievement and multiple measures, including classroom observations. A composite score of these factors is then used to identify the individual as either a highly effective, effective, developing or ineffective teacher or principal. As part of the student growth component, educators will be evaluated based on a pre-determined statement called a Student Learning Objective (SLO). This piece describes what the teachers believe the students will be able to know, do or value as a result of their educational experiences.

In order to further assist the district with meeting the state’s October 1 deadline for creating the SLOs, presenter Michael Keany conducted a workshop in late August for approximately 75 members of the district’s teaching staff and administration. During this workshop, Mr. Keany discussed the evaluation process and the proper way to write a SLO. Attendees were provided with sample SLOs and the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for creating Bayport-Blue Point’s SLOs.

Mr. Keany also provided an overview on the topic of APPR to the entire district’s faculty and staff during the second superintendent’s conference day in September. Following his remarks, all staff members broke into grade-level and department-level meetings to work on their SLOs. Those staff members trained during the August workshop provided turnkey lessons and acted as valuable resources for their colleagues.

DASA, a state law that aims to protect students from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment and bullying both on school property and during school functions, was discussed at length during the district’s first superintendent’s conference day. Ingerman Smith LLP attorney Kristi DiPaolo and Chris Clayton presented an overview of the new legislation, which was approved by the state in 2010 and became effective on July 1, 2012.
"While I have questioned some New York state initiatives in the past, I am in full support of the Dignity for All Students Act," Bayport Interim Superintendent of Schools Neil Lederer said. "Over the past several years, bullying has become a major problem in schools, both locally and nationally, especially at the middle school level. I am quite encouraged and pleased by this new state regulation and believe it goes towards helping to make our schools and community a safer place for children."

Teacher of the Year Honored at Conference Day

As has become custom in the district, Bayport-Blue Point School District’s teachers and staff took time during the Superintendent’s Conference Day held this August to commend the efforts of one outstanding educator. The district congratulates Rochelle Petre on being named this year’s Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Petre, who was nominated for this well-deserved honor by her colleagues, has been a teacher in the district since 1988. She has spent most of her career teaching sixth grade at the middle school, has been named “Teacher of the Month” many times throughout her 25-year career in the district, and is seen as a leader in the field.

"Ms. Petre helped to write the current sixth-grade science curriculum and has helped to train other teachers in the teaching of specific science content,” stated Interim Superintendent of Schools Neil Lederer. “She bends over backwards to help give other teachers whatever tools they need to reach their students. For her, everything is about what's good for students."

A Successful Run in States

This past weekend, the Bayport-Blue Point boys and girls Spring track and field teams competed in the New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet at Cicero-North Syracuse high school. Over the course of two days, the teams each had eight student-athletes run, jump and/or throw vying for state championships and fast times. After all was said and done, the teams returned home with three state championship titles and 12 All-State athletes.

On day one of the meet, senior Jordan Collins set the tone by winning the girls shot put with a school record throw of forty two feet even. This was a big win as Jordan was seeded fourth and had not broken forty feet outdoors ever before setting over a two foot personal record and qualifying for the Federation finals on day two.

Next up on the hot sunny Friday afternoon, junior Harry Martin stepped up to the line to compete in the highly respected open 800 meter race. Harry got out to a great starting running his first lap in 55 seconds. He battled his competitors and a treacherous wind on the final turn and finished 4th in division II New York State public high schools earning him all-state honors. As soon as he finished, he was off to do a cool down in preparation for his relay later in the evening.

Bailey Walker was up next for the girls and was the number one seed in the four hundred meter quarter hurdles. She had a great lead going into the last hundred meters but stumbled going over the ninth hurdle. In remarkable fashion, she got up and raced to the finish, taking second place in the process. Even more amazing, was that Walker after finishing the race had one hour to recover before anchoring the girls’ 4x400 meter relay team.

The 4x4 team of Sam Triani, Courtney Dooley, Casey Hasher and Bailey Walker had run a 4:01.44 in the past which was good enough to be the number one seed in the state. Sam Triani had a great leadoff leg and running the first lap in under a minute to give Courtney Dooley the lead. Courtney held onto the lead due to her great handoff with Casey Hasher. The first two hundred meters, Hasher held off all challengers but was passed going around the last turn by two other runners. Showing remarkable heart, she kept surging the last hundred meters to ensure that she handed off to Walker in first place. Even with little rest, no one on the track was able to run with Walker as she dominated the field and came across the line first securing the state championship in a school record time of 3:58.52.

In a fitting close to day one, the boys 4x400 meter relay consisting of Jared Gray, Bailey Imbo, Paul Chiappetta and Harry Martin took the track minutes later. The wind was fierce on turn two that day. Junior Jared Gray had an excellent start to the 4x4 splitting 50.3 seconds on his first lap. Bailey Imbo received the baton and made a tremendous move to hold off a competitor and take the lead in the race. Senior Paul Chiappetta ran a tough third leg and having a near perfect hand off to anchor leg Harry Martin. On 90 minutes rest, Harry took the baton in the lead and his 49.7 second split ensured his team of the NYS public high school Division II state championship.

Day two began with a steady rain and much cooler temperatures but junior Katie Saroka was locked in and focused. She started the day off wonderfully running a three second personal best (7:12.24) and school record in the two thousand meter steeplechase finishing in fourth place. Jordan Collins threw over forty feet several more times in the Federation final and took 3rd place in the event which included athletes from large schools, small schools, Catholic and independent schools. This was in improvement for Collins who finished 4th in the Federation during the Winter Track season.

The girls 4x800 meter relay of Bailey Walker, Courtney Dooley, Taylor Darby and Katie Saroka was in the fastest section at the conclusion of the meet. Due to a great leadoff leg by Bailey Walker and a phenomenal second leg by Courtney Dooley, the phantoms found themselves in 3rd place overall. Freshman Taylor Darby ran a very gutsy race and kept the girls in a position to make the podium then handed off to Katie Saroka. Several hours after her great steeplechase performance, Saroka anchored the team to a 9:20.29 finish putting them in 4th place with a new school record time.

The boys 4x8 team of Bailey Imbo, John Antonnacci,Paul Chiappetta and Harry Martin were next to take the track looking to do something that has never been done before at Bayport-Blue Point high school: capture two relay state championships in one weekend. Right before the big race the top seeded teams watched the 23rd seed East Aurora run a 14 second season best time of 7:53.37 in heat number 2. This set the tone for the second heat which had all 16 teams run under 8 minutes. Last year only 1 team ran under 8 minutes. The phantoms ran a respectable time of 7:55.24 in a very crowded 4x8. They managed to beat their rival Port Jefferson but did not have enough today to win. Their time was a season best and placed them 4th in division II earning all four athlete all-state honors. In the last three years the boys from Bayport –Blue Point have finished 2nd, 2nd, and 4th in this prestigious race.

The phantoms also had several runners compete in the state championship meet for the first time that gained valuable experience for future years. Chris Stelling competed in the five event pentathlon which consists of the 110 meter high hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 1500 m run. He set personal records in two of the five events and was close to his best marks in two other events. Freshman Brianna Delzell competed in the three thousand meter run and was taken out in a blistering pace. Despite the fast early pace, she finished the race close to her best time which she had run two weeks earlier. The 2012 Bayport – Blue Point Spring track and field season will go down in the record books as one of the best joint efforts the school has ever seen. In addition to the state honors already mentioned, both the boys and girls teams had undefeated seasons capturing the league championship as well as the small school county championship. “The boys and girls programs did an incredible job of working together and supporting each other this year and that undoubtedly lead to the tremendous seasons that both teams put together. I am proud and honored to be a part of this.” said Suffolk County coach of the year Mike Zafonte. Girls coach Vin Ungaro added, “These are two very special teams. It’s great to see how the boys and girls get along so well and push each other to do their best. This year, and in particular the spring season, the kids all found a way to work together to perform way above expectations. They have represented themselves, their coaches and Bayport-Blue Point in an exemplary fashion.” The boys and girls teams each only graduate one senior from the group that qualified for states and this current group has already raised the level of expectations for next year.

During the month of May, students of Sylvan Avenue Elementary School devoted their efforts to raising money to support the Smile Train program. The Smile Train works to help the millions of children in the world who suffer from cleft palates and lips by providing them with free reconstructive surgery, as well as providing money for research and training for doctors. The cost of one complete cleft surgery is $250. This year, students raised $3,141 in donations for the cause. Well done!

B-BP Girls, Boys Track Take County Championships

This past week, both the boys and girls Bayport-Blue Point Track and Field teams competed in their respective county championship meets. These two county championships come just two weeks after both teams won the League VII Championships while going undefeated in all dual meets. This marks the first time the boys and girls teams have both won county championships in the same year since 2004.

On day one of competition, the boys’ team got out to a competitive start with the highlight being the dominant performance in the 800 meter race with Harry Martin, Paul Chiappetta and Bailey Imbo taking second, third and fourth place respectively. Rob Vetri and Dylan Adams set the tone for day 2 placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the grueling 3000 meter steeple chase. The boys were locked in a very close meet all throughout the second day of competition. Bayport-Blue Point, Amityville and Port Jefferson spent most of the day trading two or three point leads back and forth. Chris Stelling dominated the field in the pentathlon 1500m and ended up taking 3rd place in the final standings. Senior Chris Cavanaugh also performed his best to secure the team a crucial point in the pentathlon. First year runner and junior Jared Gray, had a monster day competing in 4 events with minimal rest in between. Jared placed 2nd in the open 400m, 3rd in the open 200m, and was a key runner on two relays. During the relays, which conclude the meet, the outcome was far from certain. In a true testament to the team’s depth, BBP won the 4x800 meter relay, took 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay and 3rd in the 4x400 meter relay. Even after accruing all of those points from the relays, the meet was still tremendously close. Junior Rob Rodriguez ended up throwing a two and a half foot personal best throw of forty five feet even in shot put that kept BBP close enough to Port Jefferson to ensure the win. Final score was BBP 104, Port Jefferson 101 and Amityville 99.50. Congratulations also to Harry Martin, John Antonacci, Paul Chiappetta and Bailey Imbo for being individual County Champions as well in the 4 x 800 meter relay.

The girls’ team got off to a great start in day one of competition having Bailey Walker and Casey Hasher make finals in both the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles with Jordan Collins winning the discus. However, at the end of day one, BBP was only in third place after a dominant performance in the 3000 meters by Miller Place. The girls took advantage of every event they could on day two of the meet ensuring a win before the relays even started. When the team needed it most, all of the girls stepped up and scored 26 more points than they were seeded to score and put the meet out of reach after a dominant 1,2,5,6 finish in the 2000 meter steeplechase and the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays both scoring well in finals which they were not supposed to make. The MVP for the girls between both days was junior Casey Hasher who ran in seven events over both days and helped the team make finals in both the 4x1 and 4x4. Sam Triani also had a great leadoff leg both days in the 4x400 running the 400 meters in 60.1
seconds on day one and then running an amazing 59.7 on day two. Congrats to the individual County Champions: Jordan Collins in Shot Put and Discus, Bailey Walker in the 400 meter hurdles and Long Jump and Katie Saroka in the 2000 meter steeplechase.

Next up both teams will be competing in the Section XI State Qualifier at Port Jefferson High School June 1st and 2nd to see who will represent BBP in the New York State Championship Meet the following weekend. As of right now, Bailey Walker is ranked number one in the state in the 400 hurdles and Jordan Collins is ranked number one in the state in discus (and 2nd in shot put). The 4x400 meter relay is currently ranked 2nd and the 4x800 is 4th. For the boys, the 4x400 meter relay is currently ranked number one and the 4x800 is 2nd.

Making Healthy Choices

During this season of end-of-year dances, proms and graduation celebrations, students of Bayport-Blue Point High School are being encouraged to make healthy choices. All high school students, as well as the parents and prom dates of eleventh and twelfth-grade students, were required to attend assemblies in which Steve Chassman, Clinical Director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), presented a psycho-educational program focused on students’ behaviors and attitudes. He provided them with the knowledge needed to make better informed decisions and say no to drugs and alcohol.

Additionally, sixth-grade students of James Wilson Young Middle School were encouraged by the members of the high school’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) organization to write personal letters and draw pictures for the prom invitations, encouraging high school students to make healthy choices and set a good example.

Board of Education To Immediately Address Leadership Challenge

Expected to Appoint Interim Superintendent for the 2012-13 School Year, Begin Formal Search for New Superintendent of Schools

The Board of Education of the Bayport-Blue Point School District will begin the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Interim Superintendent of Schools for the 2012-13 school year, after being formally notified that current Superintendent Dr. Anthony Annunziato has been appointed as the new Superintendent in the Smithtown Central School District.

The Board is expected to accept the June 30th, 2012 resignation of Dr. Annunziato at its meeting on April 3rd.

“Dr. Annunziato has given our district seven years of excellent leadership,” said Board of Education President James March. “We are disappointed to see him move on, but truly happy for him as he continues an impressive professional trajectory in a much larger district. We wish him great success in Smithtown; they have gotten one of the best education leaders on Long Island.”

Mr. March noted that the Board believes Dr. Annunziato has helped to elevate an already strong district during his time as Superintendent, pointing to the broadening of the district’s curriculum, relative financial stability, and commitment to transparency. “He has been a strong, transformative leader,” said Mr. March.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I have had in Bayport-Blue Point,” said Dr. Annunziato. “It’s exciting to take on a new professional challenge, but it is also bittersweet for me, because after seven years, I have developed some wonderful, lifelong relationships in this community.”

Board President March noted that hiring a new Superintendent of Schools is typically a lengthy process, and one that would certainly not be complete in time for the start of the 2012-13 schoolyear in July. Therefore, because of the timing of Dr. Annunziato’s resignation, the Board expects to secure the services of an Interim Superintendent for what is likely to be the entire 2012-13 school year, while it conducts a formal search for a new Superintendent of Schools.

“This is really a two-step process,” said Mr. March. “Our first order of business will be to interview candidates to serve as the Interim Superintendent of Schools. Those interviews will be held over the next several weeks so that we can identify an interimleader and ensure a smooth transition as Dr. Annunziato winds down his work in the district over the next three months.

“Once that is done, the second step will be to research our recruitment options, which could include the use of a search firm or a self-guided process. That is likely to begin in earnest after the start of the 2012-13 school year.”

Collecting School Supplies for Kenya

The iLead leadership program at Bayport-Blue Point High School will be holding a school supplies drive to benefit the Nguyumu Primary School in the Korogocho “slum settlement” of Nairobi, Kenya. Korogocho is one of at least twenty identified settlements in Nairobi and houses roughly 200,000 people within 1.5 square kilometers.

There are approximately 800 students who attend the Nguyumu Primary School and only ten teachers to serve them. There is no running water or electricity, yet students arrive eager to learn, unfazed by the lack of computers and books or the limited supply of paper and pencils.

The members of the iLead program recognized an opportunity to help those in need and have arranged for drop-off boxes to be placed in the main offices of each school in the district from March 13 through April 4. Additional boxes will be stationed at the high school and middle school spring concerts, as well as the PTSA Fashion Show and the National Honor Society dodgeball tournament.

The students encourage others to show their support by donating new or gently used school supplies including, but not limited to, pens, pencils, paper and notebooks. Any support is greatly appreciated.

2011-12 PARENT SURVEY

District Seeks Community Feedback
The Bayport-Blue Point School
District is encouraging its parents and students to communicate their
thoughts on how well the district’s schools are serving their needs. The
Parents’ Voice School Issues Survey was launched on Thursday, March 1,
2012 as part of a series of planned communication initiatives intended
to engage all stakeholders in discussions on how to ensure the best
possible education for all of the district’s students.

Issues to be explored include academic preparation,
student support, parent engagement, school leadership, school
operations, safety and behavior, and technology. All district parents,
as well as students from James Wilson Young Middle School and
Bayport-Blue Point High School, are being asked to participate in the
survey. District teachers recently took part in a similar poll.

The district worked with independent research and
communications firm K12 Insight to launch the survey, a key component of
the district’s strategic plan.

Parents in the district were sent email invitations
requesting their participation. Any parent who did not receive the email
may access the survey through this Parent Survey link.

Computer labs located in district schools will also
have access to the survey so that students will be able to participate. A
parent without Internet access may request a paper survey by contacting
the district at 631-472-7860 ext. 8090. Students will
take the survey during class by entering a unique login number. The goal
is to ensure widespread inclusion and feedback.

The survey will remain active until Friday, March
23, 2012. Once the data has been reviewed, the district will convey the
results to the community and offer an explanation as to how they will
use this data in order to make more informed decisions.

Author Kenn Nesbitt Visits Blue Point Elementary School

The students of Blue Point Elementary School received a special visit from author and poet Kenn Nesbitt. Mr. Nesbitt, author of 13 published books, engaged students with an interactive reading of More Bears, his first written story picture book. In addition to discussing funny experiences from childhood that would inspire his future writing, Mr. Nesbitt shared several humorous poems and songs, including “My Bunny Lies Over My Doggie.” This and many other silly poems can be found in his 2009 poetry collection My Hippo Has the Hiccups: And Other Poems I Totally Made Up.

Mr. Nesbitt taught students how to create silly poems of their own. Together the group created several poems based on the well-known melodic round “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” He encouraged students to be as creative and silly as they could be.

Mr. Nesbitt discussed the process involved in writing and publishing a book and took the time to answer students’ questions. Before leaving the school, he signed and personalized copies of his books pre-ordered by students.

Birds of Prey Visit Bayport-Blue Point

Fourth and fifth-grade students enrolled in the districtwide Program for Instructional Enrichment (P.I.E.) are completing a unit on birds of prey. They have completed independent research projects, along with experiments exploring the unique characteristics of these birds.

The lesson was brought to life when members of the Sweetbriar Nature Center of Smithtown paid a visit to the class, bringing with them some of the very same birds of prey that students had been learning about.

The presentation allowed students to meet owls, falcons and hawks and learn about the adaptations that help these birds survive. They also explored the role played by humans in the birds’ survival and how humans can help make a difference.

Celebrating Culture

Academy Street Elementary School third-grade students in Nicole Greco’s class proclaimed, “Gung Hay Fat Choy!” as they celebrated the Year of the Dragon and the Chinese culture. Students researched China’s art, language and customs, including learning how to use chopsticks and tasting different kinds of Chinese food.
