In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, kindergartners from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently took a field trip to the Bayport Fire Department in an effort to solidify their understanding of important fire safety practices.

Upon entering the fire station, the students were greeted by firefighters, who offered a number of valuable tips and life-saving information. The students learned the importance of changing their smoke detectors’ batteries every six months, the proper emergency telephone number to call in the event of a fire and how to stop, drop and roll.

Additionally, the students were broken up into groups and visited various activity stations geared toward enhancing their fire-safety skill sets. The stations allowed them to operate a fire hose with firefighters’ assistance, sit inside a real fire engine, and practice their stop, drop and roll skills in a mock emergency situation.
