Staff and students from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently gathered to celebrate the completion of a construction project that will have countless benefits on current and future students alike – the renovation of the school’s library media center.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School Principal Alane Dugan opened the celebration by welcoming all attendees and thanked the individuals who were instrumental in the completion of the project. “The newly renovated and expanded library is beautiful space for you to explore, learn and grow,” she said.

To symbolize the library’s official opening, Bayport-Blue Point Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy P. Hearney and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Theodore Fulton used ceremonial scissors to cutaway a ribbon strung in front of the library entrance and welcomed all to explore the new space.

In addition to having a larger floor space, the renovated library features updated furniture, new carpeting and upgraded bookshelves. The project was part of the district’s community approved bond, which also brought updates to the district’s other elementary and secondary libraries.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, it was also announced that Sylvan Avenue Elementary School won the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. This honor was given to the district’s elementary school that had the most participants and greatest number of books read during the summer vacation. In total, 6,982 books were read during the summer, with 32.8% of all Sylvan students participating. For the honor, the school received a commemorative trophy, which will be displayed in the library this school year. Sylvan Avenue’s top participants in the program were Samantha Hauser, Skylar Johnson, Christopher LoSardo, Michelle Rosenzweig and Ava Stumpf.
