Embracing the relaxation techniques of the ancient Indian exercise form, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students have been engaged in a unique physical education unit centered on yoga. During the week-long introduction study, the students learned about the origins of yoga, several different yoga poses as well as the benefits this lifetime activity has on the mind, body and soul.

“Yoga has something for everyone, no matter what age or skill level, and that is perfect for a physical education environment,” stated physical education teacher Jessica Richford. “The benefits of practicing yoga are increased strength and flexibility, in addition to prevention of injury and increased mental focus.”
