The start of 2013 was especially significant for the students at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, as on Jan. 2 they welcomed back one of their own – fifth-grader Marco Daidone, who has been out of school since last March recovering from osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Upon his arrival to the school, Marco was greeted by a sea of cheering classmates and friends. Holding paper signs to welcome Marco back were his grade-level peers, along with the second-grade classmates of his brother Vincent. Having undergone several procedures and surgeries during his time away from school, Marco proudly returned to Academy Street stronger and, best of all, cancer-free.

“I am really happy to be back at school and back with my friends, and I’m looking forward to doing some work in my new classroom,” said Marco. “I was pretty shocked and embarrassed to see all of my classmates and brother’s classmates outside when I arrived here this morning, but at the same time I was really excited.”

As the school’s students settled back into their studies following the holiday recess, their smiles and warm wishes for Marco hung in the air as collectively, all of Academy Street looks forward to a happy New Year.
