Celebrating Flag Day

As a way of showing respect toward the nation’s flag and all of those who have done their duty to defend it, staff and students from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently joined one another to take part in their 10th annual Flag Day celebration.

Students clad in their patriotic outfits and waving their miniature American flags, were addressed by Sylvan Avenue Elementary School Principal Alane Dugan in the first part of the ceremony. She gave insight as to why Flag Day is celebrated, and informed the students that it also serves as the anniversary of the inception of the U.S. Army. After her welcoming address and a reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, members of the AMVETS Post 111 marched their way down the line of students and proceeded to the ceremonial raising of the flag. Additionally, Karen Mahoney’s fourth grade class brilliantly signed “America the Beautiful” for everyone to see.

Once inside the school gymnasium, fifth grade representatives took part in a skit which showcased the essential ingredients which blend together to create the American flag. The essay contest winners from grades three, four and five were announced, along with the poster contest winners from kindergarten, first and second grade. To conclude the ceremony, the students once again raised their flags in the air and sang in unison to Lee Greenwood’s hit song “God Bless the U.S.A.”

The district would like to thank speech and language pathologists Laurie Katz and Christine Monahan, along with the Flag Day Committee, for coordinating the special event for all to enjoy.
