The Dec. 18 Bayport-Blue Point School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the accomplishments of both students and staff members alike.

Before Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Hearney addressed the community to recognize the evening’s accomplished groups and individuals, he first introduced the Bayport-Blue Point High School Vocal Jazz Choir, along with director Jean Goloski, as they performed a number of holiday classics for all to enjoy.

The Bayport-Blue Point High School’s varsity girls volleyball team was on hand to accept recognition for their recent accomplishment of securing a third-place finish in the NYSPHSAA’s Girls Volleyball Championships held in Glens Falls, New York in late November. In addition to this feat, the girls also claimed the title of Suffolk County Champions for their stunning athleticism this past season.

Bayport-Blue Point High School student-athlete Brenna Horan was recognized for being named an All-County and State qualifier for her excellence in swimming. Additionally, the combined Bayport-Blue Point/Sayville High School varsity swim team recently took third place in Suffolk County.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Karen Mahoney was named the Teacher of the Month for the month of November, and was presented with a token of appreciation from the Board of Education in recognition of her efforts as an educator.

According to a statement prepared by Mrs. Mahoney’s colleagues, “This dedicated educator works tirelessly to provide each student with academic rigor. She holds her students to high standards, and coaxes the best out of each student in an effort to maximize his or her potential.”
