The Oct. 3 Board of Education meeting was one rooted in celebrations and commendations.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Hearney began the meeting by thanking a select group of staff that contributed toward Bayport-Blue Point High School being named a Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. It was one of 342 schools nationwide chosen for this honor based on the school’s overall academic performance and progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Additionally, a number of students in attendance were recognized for being named as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. Although only a portion of the students were in attendance, the grand total of 97 honorees includes both current students and members of the Class of 2017.

Four Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors were also given tokens of appreciation by the Board of Education for being named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their exceptional academic performance on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The district congratulates Ben Marantz, Antonio Martinez, Benjamin Papa and Kevin Polanish for earning this remarkable achievement.
