Collecting School Supplies for Kenya

iLead-Program.jpg
The iLead leadership program at Bayport-Blue Point High School will be holding a school supplies drive to benefit the Nguyumu Primary School in the Korogocho “slum settlement” of Nairobi, Kenya. Korogocho is one of at least twenty identified settlements in Nairobi and houses roughly 200,000 people within 1.5 square kilometers.

There are approximately 800 students who attend the Nguyumu Primary School and only ten teachers to serve them. There is no running water or electricity, yet students arrive eager to learn, unfazed by the lack of computers and books or the limited supply of paper and pencils.

The members of the iLead program recognized an opportunity to help those in need and have arranged for drop-off boxes to be placed in the main offices of each school in the district from March 13 through April 4. Additional boxes will be stationed at the high school and middle school spring concerts, as well as the PTSA Fashion Show and the National Honor Society dodgeball tournament.

The students encourage others to show their support by donating new or gently used school supplies including, but not limited to, pens, pencils, paper and notebooks. Any support is greatly appreciated.
