Small Moments Celebrated

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School first-graders polished their writing skills by drafting "small moment" personal narratives based on their own life events.

Throughout the monthlong project, the young writers examined mentor texts and worked to impart those authors’ craft moves into their own pieces. They created “pop-out” and sound words, as well as learned how to read with expression. The initiative was part of the grade level’s introduction to the Lucy Calkins Units of Study series.

As a culmination to the study, the students selected, refined and illustrated their favorite narratives. They shared the final drafts during a “small moments” writing celebration by reading the narrative aloud to a classmate and sharing what they liked about each other’s works.

“My colleagues and I are so proud of the students for all of their hard work,” said first-grade teacher Sara Desmond. “We have seen them grow as writers from the start of the project until today.”
