Recognized Music Educator

Bayport-Blue Point High School chorus teacher James Cottone was named one of 213 quarterfinalists for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation.

Mr. Cottone has been a teacher in BBP for the past five years. He currently teaches the high school chamber choir, mixed chorus and jazz choir. He has also taught eighth-grade chorus for four years. Under his leadership, the high school choral program has more than doubled in size.

This award was established to recognize current educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. Each year, one recipient is selected from 10 finalists, and recognized for his/her remarkable impact on students' lives. The winner will be flown to the host city of the Grammy Awards to accept the award, attend the Grammy Awards ceremony and receive a $10,000 honorarium. The nine other finalists will each receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists will receive matching grants.

A total of 4,500 nominations from across all 50 states were received for this year’s contest.
