Memorable Fun Run

Academy Street Elementary School third- through fifth-grade students laced up their sneakers and participated in the annual Friends of Carly Fun Run in May.

The annual event, held in memory of former Academy student Carly LeStrange, invited students to run a 1-mile course through the surrounding community. Colorful signs, including Carly’s famous motto of “Because Nice Matters,” lined the circle at Academy Street Elementary School as the racers took their marks, and parents and peers gathered to cheer on the racers.

The school is also using the annual event to fundraise for a cause connected to Carly’s memory. This year, they will apply all donations to start a Carly LeStrange Scholarship Fund for a graduating Bayport-Blue Point High School senior who best exemplifies Carly’s commitment to promoting the importance of kindness. The school expects the first scholarship will be given to a member of the Class of 2017.
