Stepping Back in Time

District fourth-graders enhanced their understanding of the Colonial period during a visit to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

The trip, which connected to the grade level’s social studies curriculum, enabled them to take an up-close look at artifacts and relics from the time period. They examined the interior and outside of a one-room schoolhouse from Manhasset, the surrounding farm and enjoyed an old-fashioned root beer and pretzel at the Noon Inn. They also learned that the familiar phrase, “Sleep tight...don’t let the bedbugs bite!,” comes from the time when straw mattresses were riddled with bugs and laid upon ropes that would sag, and sleepers needed to tighten them up before settling in for the night.
