As an enrichment to their classroom studies, Blue Point Elementary School third-grade students had the chance to experience a taste of Chinese culture during an in-house workshop with Patricia Shih.

The Go China program focused on aspects of the country’s history, language, music, art, geography and culture. The students learned how to speak 99 Chinese words, the significance of the Chinese New Year and which colors and animals were symbolic of the emperor and empress. Additionally, the students had the chance to view Ms. Shih’s extensive collection of artifacts, including puppets from a Chinese opera, instruments and clothing.

The program concluded with several students leading their classmates in music, while others performed a traditional lion dance.

Within the classroom, the students continued their lesson by making replica dragons, lanterns and a Great Wall of China. They also had the chance to feast on rice and fortune cookies.
