Writing for the Real World

Academy Elementary School fourth-graders in Kim Rall’s class put on their creative thinking hats as they became journalists for Kidsday.

Working under the guidance of Newsday editor Pat Mullooly, the students created jokes, puzzles, surveys and articles on a wide array of topics, from a review of Flo’s Luncheonette to a book review on unreleased titles. In the coming weeks, several students will travel to New York City to conduct an interview with a yet-to-be-named celebrity. The venture has enabled the class to strengthen not only their writing skills but also their research and photography abilities.

The completed entries will be published in Newsday this April.
