Words spanning centuries and derived from different origins were the focal point of this year’s spelling bee at Academy Elementary School.

The event, which ran seven individual and two championship rounds, challenged the top spellers from each fourth- and fifth-grade class to showcase their talents and vie for the title of top speller. This year’s winner was fourth-grader Keara Schneck, who captured victory with the word hydroponic. She will now compete at the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University.

This year’s runner-up was fifth-grader Katherine LaFountain.
