To commemorate Fire Safety Month, elementary students had the chance to learn about and practice important fire procedures this October.
Academy Street and Sylvan Avenue kindergartners walked to the Bayport Fire Department, while Blue Point Elementary students visited the Blue Point Fire Department. In turn, members of the Bayport Fire Department conducted in-school assembly programs for additional grades at Academy and Sylvan.

During the programs, the firefighters spoke with the students about different pieces of equipment, the importance of a family emergency evacuation plan, checking fire alarms and the proper way to react in the case of an emergency. Students were also invited to take an up-close look at the trucks, and several teachers climbed aboard the bucket of a ladder truck and were hoisted into the air to demonstrate how the volunteers can reach even the tallest buildings.
