Connecting Character and Literature

As part of the high school’s yearlong Character Education Through Literature Program, Bayport-Blue Point High School Interact Club members Kate Vita and Shelby Mazzone recently visited with the second-grade students in Meghan Mills and Ashley Campbell’s class at Blue Point Elementary School.

Created by the Sayville Rotary Club, the program is designed to provide special read-aloud stories to the second-grade students. Working collaboratively, Chestine Coverdale, a member of the Sayville Rotary Club, and Nikki Restivo, adviser for the high school Interact Club, ensure that great role models are selected to visit the school each month to read these stories to the students. Susan Brinkman, library media specialist at Blue Point Elementary, ensures that a meaningful character education-based read-aloud title is selected. The theme for November was “acceptance.”
