Protecting Human Rights

As part of their study on the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Academy Elementary School fifth-graders discussed the basic human rights that individuals of all ages are afforded. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, teachers incorporated the topic into both English language arts and social studies lessons to reinforce students’ understanding of the complex subject matter.

After discussing children’s rights and how organizations such as UNICEF work to protect them, the students coordinated an effort to raise funds to save and improve the lives of children worldwide.  In addition to filling their Halloween baskets with tasty treats, the students went trick-or-treating for UNICEF and raised more than $404 in donations. These funds can be utilized by the organization to purchase items such as food for a hungry child or bicycles used to deliver important medicines.
