Bayport-Blue Point High School math and business teacher Michael Plugues was recently honored on radio station WBLI as part of their Top Teacher of the Month Campaign. This campaign recognizes exemplary Long Island teachers “for all of the amazing things they do to build tomorrow’s leaders” and Plugues’ students and colleagues agree that he fits the bill.

District mathematics chairperson Michael Zafonte emphasizes just how adored and trusted Plugues is by his students, saying, “I do not think he has eaten lunch alone in the last five years as there are always students filling his classroom for both math and oftentimes emotional support.” Zafonte also describes Plugues as a “we-centric” professional, whose signature phrase is “whatever you need me to do.”

For earning this award, Plugues received a $250 gift card to purchase school supplies, a $250 gift card for himself, and a special Teacher of the Month Plaque. He also had the exciting opportunity to be interviewed on the WBLI radio show “Syke & MJ in the Morning.”

Plugues thanks the BBPHS parent who nominated him, WBLI, and the entire Bayport-Blue Point community for this honor. “Most importantly,” he says, “I want to thank the students. They are my motivation to be my best every day and I can't thank them enough."
