Blue Point Elementary School’s second-graders said a bittersweet farewell to the butterflies that they observed for several weeks in the classroom as the beautiful creatures took flight this June. As part of their science studies, the students watched the creatures go through the life cycle and learned new vocabulary terms such as “chrysalis,” “larva,” “pupa,” “transform” and “metamorphosis.” Using a magnifying glass to get a close-up look, the students monitored the butterflies during each stage of their transformation and recorded the changes in a journal.
