Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s third- through fifth-graders utilized their mathematical and geographic skills as they participated in a treasure hunt activity during their physical education classes. The program, which was purchased through a donation from the school’s PTA, required the students to work together in teams to find buried “gold” while using a 12-foot piece of rope and a set of “treasure map” instructions.

In order to follow the clues, students needed to be able to identify cardinal directions, degrees and symbols for units of measure. They also had to perform addition and multiplication and employ various locomotive skills to reach the gold.

Physical education teacher Jessica Richford explained, “Miranda Paulis and I are always looking to support school events through our classes, and this is a great way to help students connect skills and concepts across disciplines.”
