District Selects New High School Principal

Dr. Gaurav Passi to Assume Role as of July 1

Following a thorough screening process, the Bayport-Blue Point School District has selected Dr. Gaurav Passi as the new principal of Bayport-Blue Point High School. Dr. Passi was appointed to his position during the Board of Education’s meeting on Tuesday, May 7 and will begin work at the high school on July 1, 2013.

Dr. Passi comes to the district with a wealth of educational leadership experience, having most recently worked as the principal of Long Beach High School. During his three-year tenure in Long Beach, Dr. Passi played an instrumental role in increasing the high school’s level of academic rigor and creating a focus on college and career readiness, including overseeing the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and substantially increasing the number of college-level courses offered at the school. Under Dr. Passi’s leadership, the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement and IB courses grew, the school worked to reduce its achievement gap among students, its graduation rate reached a historic high and the number of students receiving Regents diplomas with Advanced Designation continued to increase. With a focus on educating the whole child, Dr. Passi also initiated a comprehensive character education program, which included the formation of Long Island’s first anti-bullying club and programs focused on students’ social and emotional learning.  

In addition to his experience in Long Beach, Dr. Passi worked as an assistant principal, administrative dean and social studies teacher. He was the first-prize recipient of the 2011 Dissertation Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, has had his work chosen for publication six times, and was selected to share his best practices during several speaking engagements at Hofstra University. He is a member of the National Association for Secondary School Principals, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Nassau County High School Principals’ Association, the Long Island Council of Social Studies Teachers and the New York State Council of Social Studies Teachers.  

Dr. Passi holds a Bachelor of Arts in history, a Master of Arts in social studies education and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration and policy studies from Hofstra University. He received his Doctor of Education from Dowling College.
